Abstract Data - ADE-32 Octocontroller v1.1 Firmware upgrade

Post by abstractjuz » Fri Aug 28, 2015 6:12 am

The Abstract Data ADE-32 Octocontroller is now on sale.

The Octocontroller is an 8x output Triggering, Control & Modulation module.

Each output can be individually assigned as any one of 12x different modulation types - including Gates & Triggers, LFOs, Loopable S&H and more.

The timing of each output can be set to any Division or Multiple of the on-board Clock (or an External Clock input) allowing modulation cycles from 1/16th of a beat up to 16x bars long. The modulation types can also be Offset in time up to 360 degrees. These timings can be quantized to specific Clock Divisions or left unquantized.

There is no menu-diving - the top-level features are all accessible using a simple navigation system - however, there are some deeper, user-defineable features that allow the module to be configured to each user's preference.

This has been a long time in the making and since there's already been a few posts on Muff's - I thought I'd collate everything here now the product has been launched.

The module is available for sale directly from the Abstract Data website and I'll be shipping the first orders to distributors next week - please do get in contact with your local distributor if you want to check on stock availability.

There is a Future Music review in the August/September issue from @MylarMelodies where the module scores 9/10.

@DivKid will be doing a thorough overview and tutorial video for Future Music in the October/November issue and Sonic State will be doing a series of patch videos throughout September and October.

If you are in the UK - there is an Abstract Data in-store event in conjunction with London Modular on Saturday 5th September. More information can be found on the Facebook event page - be great to see some of you there.

Finally, in conjunction with the ADE-32 launch, Abstract Data has re-launched its website with a completely new design - please do check it out.

[18/05/2016] Very pleased to announce that the v1.1 Firmware upgrade for the ADE-32 Octocontroller is now available.

An updated manual, detailed installation instructions, a description of all new features and all files and can be found at: http://www.abstractdata.biz/ade32/firmware

1) New Features
• External clock resolution can now be selected from 1, 4 or 24 PPQN.
• The ADE-32 now has two clock modes. Choose between internal clock mode where the ADE-32 runs from its own internal clock or external clock mode where the ADE-32 will not run unless a clock source is present at the external clock input.
• Switching clock modes when no external clock is present can be used for manual stop/start control.
• Each output can now be muted individually. The blue edit LED flashes to indicate a muted state on the currently selected output.

2) Changes
• Quantized (0-1V) or unquantized (+/-5V) S&H CV types can now be set locally, per output.
• Pulses, gates and loops are now unipolar 0-5V.
• Gate 1 and 2 lengths are now 1/16, 4/16, 8/16 and 12/16 respectively.
• The 2 blue bar/beat LEDs reverse out to show when the ADE-32 is running under external clock.
• LED indicator behaviour standardised to 3 flashes for all option and global settings.

3) Bug Fixes
• Fixed a bug where pulses would not trigger at clock divisions greater than 16 || 4.
• Fixed a bug where output types 9-10 might act eratically when allocated to output 8.

@DivKid was one of the first people to spend some serious time with the Octocontroller and has kindly done 3x great patch videos.

All 3x of these patches were completely controlled by single Octocontroller handling all Gates, Triggering and Modulation - I'll let @DivKid chip in with more detail if he wants.

Intriguing module! I’ll just leave a link here to this SonicState Music Messe video, which is the only overview video I’ve found for the ADE-32 to-date:

Escape From Noise will definitely be one of the first European distributors to have stock - not long now!

Foxtone Music don't currently stock Abstract Data - but I have let them know about the release. Please feel free to give them a yell - I'd be happy to hook them up.

The reset in is a nice addition missing on many syncable lfos/ cv sources. To sync and lfo and have it reset to the start of the sequence is :hyper:
The looping feature on the s&h is cool too. I will snag one for sure. Great work :yay:

In this month's issue of Future Music Magazine (#296) - @MylarMelodies gives the ADE-32 Octocontroller a solid 9/10 review in a thorough, full-page article.

"When you consider how much dosh eight of the cheapest LFOs would cost you, and that this does far, far, far more than that, in less space - synchronised too, or not - it's a remarkable module"

I would like to hear more about that Looping S&H mode(s)
i have no touring machine, so........

i understand you can loop to a certain lenght, and in sync,
but how would one change the content of that loop ?
For sale / reduced prices ( swiss (we are NON-EU)/ in case it makes sense_ EU/WW)(CHF +- = $):
lowered prices: Dotcom Q960: 650.- / Q119: 420 / ( i also have one or much likely two 19" Frames)
ATV A-Frame incl. Accu and Bag: 830.-, like new, quasi unused.

Got mine today. I didn't have a long time to play with it but I got an absolutely crackin rhythm out of it.

It's sooo easy to use.

Fantastic!

Hi @Funky40
Funky40 wrote: i understand you can loop to a certain lenght, and in sync,

Every Output Type has an Option - which varies between the different Output Types - and 2x Parameters: Clock Division/Multiple and Offset.

The Option for the 2x S&H types (CV and Gates) is to Loop the last 'n' values.

From there - you can adjust the Clock Division and the Offset of the Loop (and the quantising settings) - just as you would with e.g. an LFO.

How many values are looped depends on the Clock Division you have set when you start Looping - but it's between 4 and 16 values.

ok, thats the part i´ve not gotten:
so i can *start* looping at any time, and it will then just grab what the S&H is spitting out,
means, if i´m not happy, i just "start looping" by new ? right, ...and thats all ?
how would i start the looping ?

i just checked the Manual again,
i indeed can´t see any info about how to loop....or do i overlook it ?

1) Select an Output to Edit
2) Assign one of the S&H Output Types (CV or Gates) to an Output
3) Press the Option button - you are now looping the last bars worth of values
4) Press the Option button again - Looping is now off and the S&H returns to free-running

Page 5 of the manual explains how the Option button works for the different Output Types and there is a chart on page 11 to show each Option for each Output Type.
