What kind of euro OCD do you have?

Post by radiokoala » Fri Jan 22, 2016 3:12 pm

Modular OCD – or modular obsession compulsive disorder, – is kind of OCD best described with individual inability to feel satisfaction with using modules in their original condition, as purchased from the shop. This kind of synth-rome is associated with additional expenses such as but not limited to: knobs, panels, and other parts intended to alter the module appearance, as to let it better integrate into the rack and make it suit one's sense of beauty most completely and thoroughly. (Wikipedia)

Are you too unable to feel happy about new metallic shiny things before you change some aspect of their looks? Let's find out for the first time in history which time of modular OCD is the most prevalent among muff wiggler folk: browsing the grayscale catalogs or swapping knobs to the ones of the same type/color. Share your stories here, and the more unusual the better. Maybe you tighten your hex nuts so that they all are the same degree of rotation? Or even swap nuts on jacks so they all are knurled nut type? Ever soldered in the new LEDs because you disliked the color or swapped all op-amp ICs in favor of Bangladesh-made nonames which sound like real vintage? All of this is heartily welcome – Go ahead!

You left out way to many things to do my OCD justice. Where is lining up modules vertically? Where is keeping important patch points close? Where is symmetry? Functional balance? And finally, the poll does not allow for multi-selection. This is flawed! ;)

Ok so I will go and admit that I harbor a (bordering on) unhealthy obsession with the console, and with diy. My cabinet is built to the standard (and technique) of a high end custom motorcycle, and probably costs more to reproduce than all the modules it can hold ready made. I've never even considered trying to make a circuit board, I'm not an engineer and even though I know the process, I could not design and make one with all the considerations - noise, etc, and while I could probably mill out a fine panel, I'm not set up to do the graphics. I went looking for Lettraset pres type, but it seems they no longer make it. But give me a pile of metal and a little time, I can fabricate just about anything. So I did source parts and solder up all of my modules myself, but the console is (at the moment) one of one, I designed it to work for me ergonomically and gave it a look of "space age" late 1950's sci fi. It is intentionally somewhat heavy so it stays put for patching, and would look killer on stage. Whenever I decide to add on, the design will stay the same and all will be permanently attached into one piece.

Unsurprisingly, I voted for "Matching Colors".

You left out all of the above. Knobs, panels and color.

I have to admit, I am trying to fill out my monorocket with black tolex as an entirely black modular system to contrast with my silver monorocket that sits next to it... Not sure how OCD that is. In general, I really do hate mixing black and silver modules.

I agree with listentoaheartbeat - my OCD would come down to "layout" (which can take several sub-forms). :sadbanana:
From your list, it would be knobs. Whenever possible I swap out any rubberized knobs for Davies.

Other: need to have everything in real cases, none of these open-frame rails with cheeks. Partially this is practical, I have too much clutter and cats and could easy mess up exposed electroncs.

So you're saying there's a market for :75: 2HP blanking panels with gently randomly pulsing LEDs in them?

I'm obsessed with making awesome shit.

My modular is a tool, not furniture.

Also you should have put rack rash on the list. There are a swarm of wigglers quite concerned over it.

I voted for panels, but specifically regarding

1) Jack placement
2) Whether or not there is a graphic/etc indicating that a jack is an input or output

Panels... definitely panels. Nothing drives me crazier than a manufacturer that thinks my modular is their visual canvas. It's a musical instrument, not a clown suit! Stick with black on silver FFS. :hihi:

That said, I do like a black panel as long as it's in a row with other black panels. I even went so far as to buy digital calipers to measure my O'Tool panel so I could replace it with a black one of my own design. (It lives in a skiff with my PP/Brains/Rene... and a black CVP.)

*pretty sure this is standard practice but...

rearrange the case...

it can be better

rearrange the case again...

oh.. i got a new module..

rearrange entire case..

that should be next to that obviously..

rearrange the case...

Mine have to be:
- lining up modules vertically
- zones by functionality
- no LED dead zones (makes it bloody difficult)
- single manufacturer per row (crazy!)
- I have the opposite thing with knobs - I want them to be exactly as specified by the manufacturer. Panels and knobs have to be original
How sad is that
