Bought my second Mantis 2nd hand. Not a wise thing to do. I'm not sure what the previous owner did to/with it, but it looks like a yellowish C-64. Does any one knows if there is a way of getting it back to gray? Retr0bright?

Sounds like a smoking environment or it sat in front of a window to give it that cherished C64 look.

Speak to tip top first however........

If you want to do a bodge- look on google for cleaning snes systems, these go a disguting yellow over time and it’s easier to sell clean looking ones so a couple of methods developed for cleaning them up.

anyone using a different power adapter than the tip-top to power the mantis? And if so which one. I’m in the process of tracking down noise in my system and wondering if there are better options than the tip-top adapter.

Cheers
Did you end up trying a different power adapter? I am replacing mine because the brick buzzes, thinking there is a busted capacitor.

I've got three and all are slightly different colours. The original was more of a cream colour, the second was a lot more grey then the third (second-hand) is the yellowish C-64. So it could just be natural variations in material?

Agree it would be nice if they were uniform colours though,

Mantis cannot be powered from USB. The second connector on Mantis is for Syncbus but the cables were never made due to lack of demand.
Can the same bus be used for the Select Bus protocol? It's the same pin-out, no?

Also, any chance you're planning for another bracket design that would accommodate three cases? A few photos so far seem to showcase it could be done. The angles allow it. I'd definitely consider a third Mantis if that becomes an option.
I can confirm that Mantis case power rails do transmit select protocols between Rene Mk2 and Tempi without the need for the isolation cable - (as long as you are not using the syncbus of course) Change states works fine anyway.

To avoid C64 colors, I suggest Tiptop to produce a black version of the mantis case. Or even better, orange mantis case  :bananaguitar:

I sent an e-mail inquiry to Tiptop. They said black Mantis cases will be coming mid 2021.

I did. its been a minute since then but I pointed my noise problems to my old (newish) apartment. being close to some serious radio towers and poor wiring was what I chalked it up to. My last apartment was a nightmare for RF and all kinds of random noise lol. It was driving me MAADDDDDDDD

I thought they were white. But when mine arrived (bought new) it was more greyish! It’s fine but a bit concerning to think it might discolour over time  A black Mantis might be the go ....... or orange 8-)

I never notice the colour of mine - it's light grey - but as it's rarely left unpatched (and is one of 5 cases) and then it is mostly hidden by patch cables

Yeh, mine is in semi-retirement at the moment. Also, the thought of spray-painting a brand new piece of hardware gives me the heebiejeebies...

No, it`s not a natural variation (in my case..uhm...haha) It`s really because of sun/smoke... Emailed TipTop and they don`t know if Retr0bright is the solution because they did not try it themselves . Honest answer. Maybe i`ll try it this spring when there is more sun...

Um, just so you know... a white case would discolor just as bad as grey over time, if not worse.

Anyway, can anyone who is using 2 Mantises bracketed together into a 12U comment on the ergonomics of it? Does it seem alright fixed into that one position? Aside from the annoyance of needing 2 barrel-socketed bricks to power a system, my biggest concern with that setup is losing the ability to adjust position/angle with the case's feet.

Alas, as a Mantis owner looking to expand, it still seems like the most sensible option out there...

I went from having both mine sitting vertically to the bracket solution to save desk space - it’s taken a period of adjustment but now I don’t notice and I actually like having them that way.

Probably best to lay it flat and see how you like it for a period as those things tend to be a lot about your personal preference.
