leads me to believe that I'm indeed supposed to leave it to the left or center, and that the values on the site are reversed and it's really +5dBu, -4dBu, -15dBu which explains why I was so confused.

It's starting to make more sense now. I also see I was clearly sending a signal that was way too low into it initially because no attenuation would take place unless switching to the right.
I had exact same question and I got the email from WMD

"If using all eurorack modules, it is best to keep the THLD switch to the left, as that is expecting high level signals and will compress those well. If you put the switch to the middle or right, it will be easy to over compress the sounds. The point of the switch is for using MSCL with other gear such as Roland samplers that are notorious for having a low output volume, so they can still be compressed and not just smeared with input gain.

You are correct that the values should be reversed on the description where +5 dBu is on the left, meaning it will compress the least but work well with high level signals. "

As someone who's been using MSCL since they were released, I suggest trying different Threshold settings, so you can match it to your patch and gain staging. For example, I currently have the output of my filter going into the MSCL, and then into my fx modules. It's a highly resonant patch and the input of Spin FV-1 fx are easily overloaded, so I'm compressing pre-fx. In my case, even though it's a modular level output, the Threshold is set to the far left position (Limit is also set far left). Trust your ears.
