Most interesting/underappreciated CV/Gate/modulator modules?

Post by Conrad » Thu Apr 27, 2017 1:57 am

I hear a lot about various awesome filters or delays or oscillators or clouds, but to me creating interesting control signal paths is one of the best parts about eurorack. I just wanted to ask modules you use to generate and manipulate CV and gates are your favorites, and which ones do you think are underrated? Also it'd be cool to hear about why you like them (though if they are really that cool, it would be impossible to explain all the possible complex uses for them!).

We all know about things like tides and maths, but modules like the topobrillo sport modulator and mannequins cold mac are the ones which are really catching my attention lately. There's also that module called "the bends" that I heard a bit about from NAMM, but I haven't heard anything about it since. The modules with many modulation inputs and outputs are the most interesting in this way.

Doepfer a-152 is severely underappreciated, but it's not a modulator per se, it's a switch and a T&H and a CV-to-Gate combined in one. Does that count?

Don't know if it's either underappreciated or THE most interesting BUT, lately I've been really enjoying using the LS-1 lightstrip from Soundmachines. Easy to use and small footstep. Only CV and gate out though, so not really "complex", but I find I use it in every patch at the moment :yay:

the Lightplane is a ton of fun too! 3CV and a gate - and can record loops of movement as well. It was one of those modules I got on a whim but find it is very powerful.

As for underrated (or apparently dull) - A138m matrix mixer. Brings modulation sources together and outputs controllable complex CV wobbliness. I have 2 and could do with a 3rd...

That's A-138m

Cause all the doepfer mixers are A-138 8-)

Thanks for that ! I must have made a typo due to over excitement simply thinking about this fabulous module! :hyper:

For random gate stuff, Mutable Branches and Ladik R-110 are great.

made this little vid for the ladik s-090 skipper + s-075 burst modules, which i've used for advancing sequencers in weird ways (among other things)

I don't know if its underappreciated or its just me not seeing it in people's cases, but Antimatter Launch Codes, is brilliant featureset for the hp and good price too.

I love my MFB dual LFO. Sure it is not as powerful as a Batumi or some dual function generator but it has internal routings for frequency crossmodulation with attenuators for FM depth which makes it pretty easy to create two nicely warbling modulation sources without the need for tons of multiples, attenuators and patchcables or some fancy expensive wavetable LFO. And with a clock division sent to the reset inputs you can make these warbling CVs loop in sync with the rest of your tune.

The Doepfer A-162 Dual Trigger Delay.

Can turn a straight clock into something more "human", especially when re-mixed along with the original clock CV.
Chain Out one to In two for "organic"ratcheting.

Also can generate prolonged gates.
Great for applying swing, poly-rythms, flourishes, etc.
Can impart an very different and personalized feel to an entire patch!

The Doepfer A-132-2 Quad VCA lets you control four CVs with one set of controls. I have four of them!

Basically, most everything we make:

Image

Controllers seem to be the LAST thing people spend money on. Until they get a large system and start getting tired of reaching through the spaghetti to control things. Set a well equipped controller skiff, that you have spent some decent time learning, in front of any rig, and you will play it well.

Verbos voltage multistage for me - you can use it to modulate itself, individual gate outputs for 8 stages plus an envelope out, slides, 2 x 8 stages. Can be used as a sequencer, or envelope or lfo, even an oscillator.

I don't hear a lot about it but for off the wall sequences it is fantastic.

Lately I've been curious about the Animodule M1xxOr; I haven't noticed many mentions in threads. Anyone have experience with it/comments/etc?

@jwm i just picked up the s-090 skipper and an R110 this week. Waiting to pair it up with my new 2HP Brst for a trio of fun trickery

MI Branches, four modes for each of the 2 channels, many uses in my patches, such a lively module.

I have an Olegtron Confusor 2, which is a pretty crazy thing, definitely under appreciated.

WMD SSM is on the way, so I can't comment yet, but I'm almost certain it will rank up there for me, even though it probably doesn't qualify as "under appreciated".

Varying amount of under-appreciation:

Switches (WMD SSM, Itijik Router, Macro Dynamic Destiny, et al)

controllers/programmers (e.g., Synthwerks)

Batumi, Kermit, Lowgain CVP-1
Racks
Solaris Site
Stuff for sale
Stuff for sale shown on Modulargrid
WTB: Black panels

Unflappably nonchalant, with some exceptions
