chaining two uzeus with one power supply

Post by cocco88 » Fri Sep 08, 2017 5:08 am

some new digital modules arrived and i've maxed out my uzeus
actually this is my setup + monome grids but i'm planning to fill it up soon maybe with one more monome module + arc

https://www.modulargrid.net/e/racks/view/361810

to power it up 'm using uzeus + booster power brick ( https://www.signalsounds.com/tiptop-aud ... tor-3000ma )

i was thinking about buying a second uzeus
is there a way / is it possible to chain two uzeus to have just one power brick?
how much power in that case i'll have?

is it better to change completely my power system? maybe two 4ms row 40 or two zeus studio bus?

When you say "I've maxed out my µZeus," what do you mean?

If you mean that you reached your PSU's MA rating, then adding a second µZeus to the same PSU isn't going to do you any good.

If you mean that you ran out of connections, then you can just add some flying bus cables. You can use as many as you need, as long as you don't exceed the PSU's limit, or µZeus's limits by too much*.

* Note that the "limits" on the rails are based on heat dissipated by the regulators, and it doesn't really hurt to exceed them a little bit. For example, you can put 200MA on the 5V rail with no problem. The PSU's limit is closer to an actual limit.

But if you're expanding and asking this question, chances are that you've outgrown (or are outgrowing) the µZeus. I outgrew it at 6U, and moved to an Intellijel supply. I'd highly recommend something like that. If nothing else, you'll appreciate the extra HP!

i've reached like 2000ma, the max of a uzeus+boost

don't know if adding a second one in my case is the best solution

you can add another uZeus but it will need it's own separate power supply plugged in. I have 4x uZeus in my setup, each with it's own power supply.

When I hit the max on the -12V rail on my uZeus, I switched to a Synthrotek Super Power Green instead. I still have my uZeus and the 3000mA PSU in case I start a second rack later on.

The uZeus output power is dependent on the wall wart attached. You can chain two uZeus off of the same wall wart but you will gain no extra power from it. The only way that would work is if you got a giant wall wart (or whatever supply ups could get) that was larger than the one you have now, and chain it between the two uZeus. At that point you might as well just buy another brick setup like you have now.

My view is that no "best solution" ever involves a µZeus. µZeus is inherently a ball of compromises.
