edit.. the update procedure do not look THAT difficult
I'm just back from some travels so this has been a bit delayed, but I'm working on a fix for the fix (it was a fix one thing, break another thing situation). I hope to have it out soon. I've also gotten a bunch of feedback on the update procedure and we're trying to make it as straightforward as possible. More on this topic coming soon :sb:

Got mine today. I really suck at FM synthesis, but just having it all laid out like the matrix is excellent. This can really churn out everything from lovely barely warbled stuff to harsh throbbing gnarly fuckery. A jungle of possibilities!

Yeah, have to agree on that. Would be very handy with more spots to save presets.

Ok, note to self - the Algo doesn't save the ratio settings, but only the mod matrix settings, which is a bit of a bummer, but oh well, got to learn the hard way when not reading the manual properly. Is it not possible to have the Algo save the ratio settings as well? Would make it a lot more useful, in my opinion.

I should probably understand that, but I really don't. I know those are the algos, and I've seen them in ableton's operator and in the elektron digitone, but I've always just messed around with them not quite getting it. I know it's how the oscillators are modulating one another, but that diagram makes 0 sense to my tiny brain. :p

Algo 1 = op1 mod 2, op2 mod 3, op3 mod 4, and monitor op4 output.
Algo 2 = op1 mod 3, op2 mod 3, op3 mod 4
Algo 5 = op1 mod 4, op2 mod 4, op3 mod 4
Algo 8 = op1 mod 2, op3 mod 4, and mix op2 and op4 externally.
Algo 9 = Op1 mod 2, mod 3 and mod 4, and mix op2, op3 and op4 externally.
Algo 12 = no modulation, just mix the 4 operator outputs

Seems to me like the Omsonic UPE would be a pretty nice module to pair with it, combining mixing and panning. I've found from the HD mk3 that slightly detuned carriers sharing a modulator can sound pretty incredible in stereo...

Sweet! Thanks a lot for the explanation. I'll try a few of these out. :)

Just for the record though, for anyone interested in this module who might have as little clue about FM synthesis as me - just starting from the "neutral position" (as explained in the manual), and twiddling the "safe" knobs from there will always yield a jungle of interesting sounds. Just messing with the various ratios of the oscillators is mesmerizing in it self. There really are a ton of sounds to explore in this one.

Hi!

Not sure if it was mentioned somewhere but what is the polyphony of the module?

Thanks

There are four operators, so basically four voices.

I love that the quad op is mode less but how does one go about recreating some of the specific fm signal flows (as shown above)?

A great module to pair with the Quad Operator is Mannequins Just Friends. The cascading envelopes, when plugged into any of the Quad's inputs, really animate's the sound coming out of it. Lovely.

Something which is really frustrating however is that the VCA's on the Quad Operator don't fully close. There is always noticeable sound leaking out. Hopefully this will be fixed in a future update.

In the meantime, all audio has to be routed though another VCA with master envelope to kill the noise. :zombie:

I tried to do the update, I have no idea if I succeeded :hmm: I powered down my case unscrewed the modul (and algo) then I connected the usb to my pc. I had downloaded the new firmware 1.02 and unpacked it all files in same directory..
Ok my case is powered down the usb is connected I press both the sysboot and the reset I powerup the case while holding the sysboot and reset I let the case power up and I hear my pc's "usb has been connected" sound, and I release the reset button and 2 -3 seconds later I release the sysboot... then I double click the .cmd file (update_quadop_v1.0.2) there is a very brief flicker of a window on my pc and nothing else.. the leds on the module satys off under the whole operation and does not come back on
Does that sound about right? :hmm: :hmm: :hmm:
Perhaps a instruction video on how to do this right if this is not how to do it

Oh btw not sure it matters but my pc says it does not recognize the quard op

Let me just say to any potential buyers that I wouldn't personally consider the Algo a necessity. I find it very limited, to be honest, and wouldn't have purchased it if I knew (RTFM) it didn't save the ratio settings.

Having said that - the module is excellent. There is such a wide range of pleasing sounds in this thing, and just playing around with the various ratios is such a joy.

Really interested in this. Is the is the issue of the VCA not fully closing fixable?

strange there is not more talk about this, and also bump!

I was in the market for an Complex Oscillator but then I stumbled on this..
It doesnt get more complex. How does this compare to the Akemies Castle?
Does the Humble 4op have a Mix Out for all OPs or do i need to mix them together externally?

It seems this one has more modulation inputs but the Akemies has the real Yamaha chips.

Another thing im planning to get is something like the Ladik Waveform Animator or an uFold. How would this pair with the digital FM sounds?

The AC has a fixed set of algorithms, 6 I believe, selectable on the front panel. The quad op doesn't have a fixed set of algorithms to select from, but rather you create your own by the matrix. Options are not infinite, but you can go crazy.

I'd be happy to make a sort of demo of it, but just beware that I probably appreciate sounds from it that hard-core fm enthusiasts wouldn't necessarily appreciate. I don't really know much about fm synthesis beyond the basics.
