Hey all, been playing around with some polyrhythms on the René MKII.

FUN > Reset at start for X & Y.

X is playing any 16 step sequence
Y has notes programmed on the 2nd or 3rd step of every 4th step & access to the last 4 steps of the turned off.
Pattern/snake is in initial state.

The first time I tried this I had a nice simple polyrhythm going. Then every-time I've tried to start with this same programming the Y axis just plays the same pattern repeating. Access to the last 4 steps off has no effect on the pattern.

Any tips or am I doing something wrong?

Thanks
Do you have something latched? Did you remember to save before power cycling?

Nothing latched. I don't save.

Ok. So can someone explain how to make Polyrhythms in Rene MKII?

^ I would suggest sticking in gates that are a division of /3, /5, /7, /9 etc ....

Stick a clock signal into clock divider module like the RCD and then connect the odd division clock into the Rene Clk inputs.

Ah ok. I've got Pam's?..

Is there no way to program it within the access pages? Or does the clock just stretch the steps to fit?

Yes, Pam's is fine.

Rene will only advance to the next step when gates are received, hence, if you send it odd division off gates, you will have some polyrythms happening.

Cool. Of course. But can you do it within René only?

You may want to take a look at the Rene manual. Rene requires an external clock for all sequenced operations, and has no way to multiply or divide an incoming clock pulse.

In principle, you can use the gate outs to divide clock pulses. You could clock the X channel with a fast clock, enable some of the X-gate outs, and use those to advance the Y channel. Then enable some of the Y-gate outs, and then they could be pretty poly-rhytmic, especially if the X and Y channels have different lengths.

If we are just talking X and Y channels then:

POLYMETER: Set up different settings for ACCESS on X versus Y. This is equivalent to changing the sequence length, so the two channels will be going in and out of sync with eachother occasionally lining up again and then phasing out. So if you had a 4 step sequence on X (only access to 4 steps) and an 8 step sequence on Y, they would repeat together every two cycles on X. However, both channels will typically have the same tempo.

POLYRHYTHM: Feed different but somewhat related tempo clocks into X and Y channels clocks inputs. So now the advancement of the clocks on each channel is following a different tempo regardless of access settings. In this case, the meter or bars of each sequence could be the same but the tempo and timing of each gate event and the ensuing melodies will be different but (hopefully) related to eachother.

Hope that helps.
