32Hp of space go.....

Post by brek01 » Tue Dec 10, 2019 1:03 pm

I made a CS style synth with mine.

Vcdlfo
Basic vco
12 pole filter
Adsr
All doepfer modules.

Not particularly imaginative I grant you, but as a compact version of a cs5 I liked it.

It's a good start. How are you playing it?

Here's how I'd spend those 32hp: -

Image

From left to right: -
Zlob Skew Fade LFO - nice flexible LFO
Qu-Bit Electronix EON - mainly intended an EG in this setup, but there's an incredible amount of other stuff packed into that 2hp
uBraids - not hugely imaginitive of me, but if I'm putting such a small case together, I feel like I need a Swiss army knife VCO
Audio Damage ADM18 Shapes - for some proper sound mangling fun in a relatively small space (sorry Geiger Counter, you just don't fit)
Bastl Cinnamon - chosen partly because it's such a nice flexible filter, but (in honesty) also because it handily fills up the odd 5hp of space remaining
Expert Sleepers Disting mk4 - just in case I forgot something essential, it's always good to have a backup plan
Mannequins /W - incredibly fun little tape/sampler/looper thing - the interface is fiddly and I'd prefer a larger module for this kind of thing, but when you're cramming things into 32hp this is ideal
AI Synthesis AI006 Stomp Box Adapter - finally, get the signal out to some external pedals for some distortion and/or delay and/or verb

The Audio Damage Shapes is the most self-indulgent pick of the bunch, and I imagine most people would get more mileage out of a second VCO and/or a bit of delay.

Assuming that there is no CV source to play the thing, I added a 2hp MIDI-CV. For the sounds, I think this could grant a good time:

if you are really looking to make for a CS-5 you'd want noise, external in, slew, s/h, a mixer and a vca. you can continue with doepfer modules if you like. but buying a used CS-5 is not too bad these days for the price of all those.

guess it'd be easier to help if we need a bit more about your plans for it, other than vintage yamaha sounds

It was controlled from a Keystep. Was not really posting for advice as such, but it's always welcome. I was just curious what others would do with a set amount of HP to play with. The answer? some good stuff. I already pulled the VCO out and plan to make a utility box with it. I have over the years owned a cs5, a cs10 on two different occasions. My second ever synth was a bought brand new CS15. At the time a was amazed by its routing options, was like a pseudo semi modular. I used to tune oscs an octave apart and do all sorts of eurodisco bass nonsense with it, triggered from the two tomtom output of an st305 soundmaster drum machine. 001100110011 or a crazy 1011010010110100 type of thing.
