Unveil your secrets

Post by inoshi » Mon Dec 16, 2019 12:15 pm

List some of your favorite modules that have managed to fly under the radar of the masses. And try not to get triggered when someone mentions something popular. :hihi:

1. Beast-Tek - Amoeba
2. Jomox - MBase 11
3. Beast-Tek - Hyper Fist
4. Doepfer - A-101-3
5. Metasonix - RK2

_Happy Nerding 3x MIA.
upper knobs are full jammable ( vs. Knob size, spacing, turn resistance! ) !
use second input to add a modulation source. The MIA wins. I´m now a Big fan of this utility and will replace everything else with those.

_FH-2, overall it wins over any other midi2CV !....this might differ for some very specific use cases.
All my basic clocking, incl. sequenzer resets, comes from the FH-2. Happy camper ! imo no competition on this. ( you can even shift the clocks )
just add a gate expander plus if needed a expander for the gate expander (FHX-8gt, EHX-8gt )

yes, i would probably not share real secrets.
But when i can help out to support great (small) Manufacturers which deliver superb work will i do !......while some of the big or much hyped ones fail again and again and again
For sale / reduced prices ( swiss (we are NON-EU)/ in case it makes sense_ EU/WW)(CHF +- = $):
lowered prices: Dotcom Q960: 650.- / Q119: 420 / ( i also have one or much likely two 19" Frames)
ATV A-Frame incl. Accu and Bag: 830.-, like new, quasi unused.

Rings isn't exactly obscure, but my poorly kept secret is two Rings in cross-feedback.

Also Teletype.

And Starling Via Scanner is growing on me.

Transient Modules 8S step sequencer: simple, immediate, full-featured, only 8hp and cheap!

DinSync Sara VCF state variable filter: for some reason iI don't read about it much here, but it is a fantastic filter.

Nonlinear circuits Triple Sloths chaotic LFOs: Brings every patch to life!

YAASSSS. stupidly sold mine a while ago.

My secret weapon is the Pittsburgh Timetable, now and forever. Especially if you can modulate the width of the clock, you can get lots of different kinds of swing coming out of the logic outs.

And VCAs.

NLC 8 bit cipher for drums and other rhythmic goodness.

NLC Mobius PiLL for complex and wonderful drone patches.

NLC Dual LPG. The filters are some of my favorite in euro and the LPGs are handy to have in drum patches as well.

Anything else from NLC, everything Andrew designs is top notch and well thought out. Many thanks for making them available in DIY as well.

ST Modular Yaksha's fate. Yes, it may be another rings clone, but it is so much more suited for live use and fun playability that I ended up selling my nrings and building two of them.

Qu-bit Synapse - sort of like MI Frames (which itself is fantastic), only more audio-focused with 8 inputs / four pairs of crossfaders. Can also switch output destinations in steps or at random.

VSL AWM-3 - Most feature-dense triple folder out there; also can mix or do subtle shaping/dynamics

Hexinverter VCNO - Noise oscillator with interesting flavors, also can do Atari-like chip/crush sounds.

IME Lider Suboctave - No, it does not just make a square out of your audio in. It shifts any audio in an octave lower while preserving the waveform. It's obscure analog tech so gets glitchy (i.e noisy) given signals of different pitches (such as detuned) or some super-complex wavetables, but generally holds up.

I might also mention ALM Boss Bow Tie, but that seems known-ish enough and maybe it's just a "me" thing thinking an assignable switch 8:1 or 1:8 is absolutely killer.

Doepfer A-103 @ full gain = a little blown out, doesn't ring out like TB-303

Doepfer A-103 @ 1/4 gain = :goo: ACID :goo:

There are also hidden features in plain sight that can only be used as part of the whole system. Patching feedback loops with mixers for example.

1. NLC 329 Phase/Flange - Ridiculous sounding 10 Stage Phaser.
2. NLC Sauce of Unce - Source of Uncertainty Clone with the access to the noise sources on the front panel. Super musical random source
3. NLC Bindubba Sequencer - Similar idea as Rene (I think the original version predates Rene actually) but with some different twists (16 gate outputs!) and all analog.
4. Noise Reap Lola Filter - great sounding Roland-ish 4 Pole OTA filter. Not sure if it's made anymore
5. Ian Fritz 2 x AD/AR - Its basically a two channel Quadra in 4hp. I got mine for $50 and it's awesome.

I mean, I do have two Plan B Model 23 ASRs and the Elby CGS734 ASR. Elby CGS762 slope detector. Intellijel Flip Flop. Plan B Model 13 Dual Timbral Gate plus a Triple Lowpass Gate. Doepfer A-121, the original CEM3320 version. Doepfer A-138e Quad Three-Way Crossfader/Mixer/Polarizer is a CV processing dream.

It seems you're not alone as ALM themselves agree with you, based on the features list:

"Features

8 way bidirectional voltage controlled switch.
1 input into any 1 of up to 8 outputs -or- 1 of up to 8 inputs into a single output.
Attenuverter and Offset controls for control voltage input
Normalized ‘Gate’ input to enable/disable switch.
Fast switching up to audio rates.
Skiff friendly
Designed and built in England.
Underrated!"
