Erica Synths Fusion VCO V2

Post by miles_macquarrie » Thu Jan 02, 2020 12:56 pm

Did an advanced search on this and coundn't find a dedicated thread.

This oscillator sounds pretty rich with some of that tube drive and I think the analog detune is awesome.

Any experienced users here? Considering adding this as next oscillator.

This is on the way, expected delivery today, but with the covid crud may be Monday. I have the Delay/Flanger Ensemble I want to pair it with to see what kind of funky sounds (?noise) I can make. I will let you know. I've had a lot of fun with the Delay today, expecting more fun soon.

Yeah, I'm surprised this one doesn't have more people talking about it.

I've got a few modules for sale and once they're sold I'm picking one up.

I was going to get fusion VCO when I started my Eurorack adventure but then I realized that it was a digital VCO.

Where did you get that information from? The erica synths website states it is a fully analogue design, based around a AS3340-VCO?

I still think though it sounds great either way, interested in peoples experiences with this one?

I think he’s referring to the Fusion VCO V1, which does use a digital oscillator for the primary oscillator (which is then tracked by the -1/-2 tube sub oscillators. You can always get an analog 2hp VCO and then use the audio in on the Fusion VCO1 and the tube subosc will track it instead. Personally I think the digital osc onboard sounds great.

Anyway the Fusion VCO2 is in fact, fully analog.

Thanks for the Clarity NoLegs.

From the demos I have heard, this VCO has a really nice thick sounding distortion, that would pair nicely with my Black Wavetable VCO and DPO. I have always wondered which one of the Fusion series would give me the most control over the distortion, provide flexibility and of course fun, and so far the Fusion VCO 2 seems to tick the boxes. I was hoping to hear it in action with this years trip to Schneidersladen, but that is delayed whilst we beat Covid 19. So in the meantime, look I forward to hearing other peoples experiences 8-)

I received mine the other day and am having a lot of fun. Fusion VCO2 --> Polivoks VCF --> Fusion Delay/Flanger = lots of fun turning knobs!

The review in SYNmag was pretty glowing. No sound examples because it's a print-only magazine though :P

Is this what suddenly drove demand for it? I'd eyed it for about two years, it was never sold out, and then all of a sudden it was sold out on a bunch of places.

Sounds great. I just got it a few days ago. Very rich tones.

Unfortunately I may have gotten a faulty module. The moment a cable goes into the volt per octave it drops 3 or 4 volts making it hard to tune back for melodic functions. Anybody else experiencing this?

pretty sure I've had that with VCOs in the past. probably means the 1v/oct isn't summed with the freq knob position for whatever reason....so, as soon as you plug the cable in, it drops to 0v

It's definitely summed with the freq knob. I just re-calibrated mine such that 12 o'clock *actually* plays a G2 when I feed it a G2 from Ansible/Grid/Kria

Thanks for clearing that up. I suppose I'll just plug a dummy cable into the input when tuning it.

Your voltage shouldn't drop when you plug a cable carrying 0V into it. The knob sums with the input voltage. I'm not sure what's going on with yours.

This thing sounds beefy. I had the Erica Synths bassline, which had similar features such as the sub oscillator and the detune. However it lacked good cv control. I had been eyeing this as a replacement but damn it draws alot of power. Also, I'm guessing its like other fusion modules, whereby the power for the module doubles for a few seconds when the case power is turned on?

Also worried that I might have the same reaction i did to this, that i did to the bassline - sounds absoluuutley killer, but the lack of cv control starts to make the vco feel very stale and samey (despite continuing to sound so good).

Comparing the vco 2 to the bassline, it looks like the only other cv-able paramaters are the pwm in and sync in, which doesnt feel like a whole lot more (why dont they add cv to the tube crunch?) Anyone have experience with the vco 2 feeling stagnant at all?
