Recommend me some Eurorack Analog Effects

Post by djd_oz » Sat Jan 04, 2020 5:42 am

I have the following which I love,

1) WMD DPLR
2) 106 Chorus

Also have the following, but not liking it so much at the moment,
1) Erica Synth Fusion Delay/Flanger
2) Xaoc Kamieniec

The following look interesting for me to try out,
1) Haible Tau Phaser
2) Erica Synth Spring Reverb or any other spring reverb

Any others that you would recommend?

The T-Rex Replicator Tape Echo Module is cheap in the moment - if you are into real analog effects, this is the one.....

The Triple Waveshaper can sound kind of like reverb-- it sort of puts a weird metal tail on things.

I can reccomend the Eowave Fluctuations Magnetiques: Stereo filter, phaser like sounds, formant filter, nasty overdrive, multi band processing if you use the individual outs and much more.

Then one <I> have been wanting is AJH Next Phase. Though it sounds so nice I'm afraid I'd want to use it on everything.

From my current rack:

I'm quite fond of the Metasonix R-56 Reverb. Has some nice crunchy feedback effects. It's a short reverb with the built-in spring tank, but has RCA connections to add an external tank for longer reverb (which I haven't done as yet).

The Doepfer A-188-1 BBD Delay with 4096 state chip is also quite a solid delay module when paired with a basic low pass filter; has an external feedback loop and plenty of CV control.

The Haible Tau Pipe Phaser from Random*Source is also a great sounding phaser effect. It can also achieve some really crazy sounds in self-oscillation mode. The only drawback for me is the lack of voltage control over the internal LFO rate or depth.

The DPLR isn't Analog. It's a pair of very Analog sounding / mid-fi Digital PT2399 Chips. They're behind loads of cheap Guitar Pedals, too.

Other dope LoFi to Mid Fi Digital is the 1-bit Delay by the Juno106 Chorus guy, and the Dub Delay by the guy who has the module of hella cheap LFOs... (Loafers, IIRC).

As for dope eurorack Analog effects, I love:

* AJH Next Phase, lush clean stereo phaser w an onboard LFO. It's a work of art, sonically, IMO.

* Trogotronic m277 dual Tube VCA, rich harmonics

* EMW Phase 45 (you can modulate the modulation), clone of the ckassic pedal of of the same name. A steal at the going rate. Very useful, from subtle to not...

* ZVez LoFi Junkie, legendary

* ZVex Fuzz Factory, legendary

* the BBD Chorus/Delay by the Juno106 Chorus guy...

All of these are Analog and they're F-ing fantastic.

Other Analog eurorack effects:

The KamienImiec Phaser by the Belgrad guys - Xaoc...
And their upcoming Delay, the Sarajewo.

Plus the specialty Filters and other things, like:

* Doepfer Wasp
* the ALM S950 Filter Clone, the MUM M8
* Pittsburgh Crush

Oh, I forgot that I already have the LoFi Junky in my rack, and yes, the Fuzz Factory sounds great!

The AJH Next Phase certainly looks very interesting, I didn't know it exist until now.

The Metasonix R-56 also looks interesting, wish there were more demos on this module.

Keep them coming!

Non Linear Circuits, good stuff, lots to choose from. I have one of his delays. Rumor has it, all the smoke in OZ is from Andrew's soldering iron. :lol:

R-56 is pretty damn good. Get a bigger spring boat, connect the RCA's and disconnect the blue, fun times.

NLC 329 Phase/Flange is an incredible phaser module. It sounds really unusual - similar to the Haible Tau phaser to my ears - and with lots of cv inputs. Highly recommended.

The Doepfer A-188-2 tapped BBD can make everything from flanging to very short delays to weird noises.

It's very deep physically and a lot of HP though.

Dreadbox Reflector.
Replaced my old Moog - 108M with it, or basically Reflector sounded good enough compared to it so I could sell the Moogerfooger to put the cash towards other things.

Wet output allows you to filter the BBD noise, when and where you want. Cheap, sounds great, does Karplus sounds and tracking is adequate for me.

The new Pittsburgh Delay looks excellent, to me.

I intend to own a pair of them. They're on my list.

I think the Pittsburgh Primary VCO is tits, and l love my Microvolt, and the new Laboratory is badass. He's got some interesting designs in the analog realm, IMO.

Big fan. No affiliation. Never even met them.

The Metasonix Reverb is really great, IMO. I've been listening to it and her other Metasonix modules in some @lisa videos. Very very nice sounds. I'm after some Metasonix lately, I guess, wanting some woody sorts of timbers. That Reverb is high on my list this year.

Doepfer A-101-3 Phaser is an amazing module in my opinion. It sounds amazing as a simple phaser, and once you start patching in feedback cycles (especially through other modules) it can just become anything you want it to be. All the way from subtle filtering to completely insane screaming distortion. And unlike many other modules, there's a lot of space to explore between those extremes.

It's huge and it's deep, but if you have the space for it, I wholeheartedly recommend it. To make the space-investment worth it, it does require you to patch a lot, though. It's not a really worth it as a simple FX that you send your signal through to make it a bit prettier. There's smaller phasers for that :)

+1 for Roland 572. Great phaser ,amazing flanger chorus and when you crank the time and put a lowpass filter behind it, a psycho bbd delay with out of control feedback.
Plus an lfo with normal and inverted output.
And a gate delay as well.
So good i have got two of this module.

I have one. It's pretty good for a low cost module. You need to modulate it externally but this means you can do some interesting things with the modulation.

Fully agree - I recently bought one for 444 € at Thomann and am very happy with it. And yes, it comes with all the drawbacks real analogue tape gear has: Wear and tear, occasional maintenance, essentially the opposite of sturdiness ... but the sound is just awesome: lush, warm, somewhat unpredictable and thus unique, quasi an instrument on its own behalf. Plus it comes with an extra i.e. replacement cassette. That said, the small danish company had some issues recently, so I might buy a third one soon ... fingers cross fingers for T-Rex.

That's because of what happened to TRex and all the maintenance issues that I went for a Strymon Volante instead. I was really ready to pull the plug then I read some more forum topics about it and well, if it's about tape hiss, I could just get an El Capistan as Strymon's emulations are good enough for that. And filtering your signal through tape players gives that warmth and glue people are looking for when it comes to mixing and tape. Had the Replicator been made by Boss, I'd have bought one right away though.
