Pittsburgh Modular Lifeforms Cascading Delay Network

Post by dooj88 » Fri Jan 10, 2020 8:50 pm

Yoooo! Hot module incoming! Been itching for some delay novelty, and having been considering the Lyra fx module, this takes it further and looks super fun to experiment with.

(not actually sure how to upload pics since the site was updated, but attached below)

Quad Delay Matrix

A study in complexity through simplicity. The Cascading Delay Network combines four 600ms voltage controllable delays with a labyrinth of internal analog signal routing to create a tangle of unique time based effects. Five distinct Cascade Modes internally reconfigure the delay lines and feedback paths with the press of a button.

Cascade Mode 1: Combines all 4 delay lines into a single delay and a unified feedback path with audio inserts and tap outs on all channels. A variation of this mode enables all 7 possible feedback paths creating a dense fog of repeats. Perfect for creating echo soundscapes, reverbs, drones, and self-oscillating feedback chaos.

Cascade Mode 2: Combines the first 3 delay lines into a single delay and a unified feedback path with audio inserts and tap outs on all 3 channels. A variation of this mode enables all 4 possible feedback paths. Channel 4 functions as a standalone delay line with independent feedback control.

Cascade Mode 3: Combines the first 2 delay lines into a single delay and a unified feedback path with audio inserts and tap outs on both channels. Channel 3 and Channel 4 are also combined into a single delay and a unified feedback path with audio inserts and tap outs on both channels. A variation of this mode enables all 3 possible feedback paths on one or both of the combined delay lines.

Cascade Mode 4: Combines the first 2 delay lines into a single delay and a unified feedback path with audio inserts and tap outs on both channels. A variation of this mode enables all 3 possible feedback paths. Channel 3 and channel 4 function as standalone delay lines with independent feedback controls.

Cascade Mode 5: All 4 channels function as standalone delay lines with independent feedback controls.

I really wish you hadn't posted this. I thought I was done buying modules this year. :bang:

Well, darn if that isn't a beautiful thing, I absolutely don't need it and I totally want it...

Amazing. Can't wait to hear this in action!

Ooooh, didn't know they were going to announce it!

Yes, this thing sounds amazing, truly.
I've spent some time messing with it at the shop.
There's a very clever switching matrix that cycles thru all the modes and handles all the routing.
Does complex bouncing delay networks, long echos to defused reverb like washes. I'm sure they'll have some samples up after NAMM, I'll check in and see what the plan is.

Seems like a pretty versatile module. Really cool concept too.

Very interested in some videos showing off what it actually sounds like :sb:

Well, if I hadn't just gotten myself a Bastl Thyme for christmas, this module would have firmly installed itself very high on my wannahavelist. Is this using four PT2399s? Or is it some quad channel DSP engine? Or something else yet?

Richard says:
I'll do a fancy video with Michael and post the web after NAMM.

...and then:
Gonna chat about it in a live stream tomorrow night about 8 or so

The fact of having all those outs, just imagining this into the Worng Soundstage. Allthough this module looks in a way simple I like the design, cause I'm pretty unsure where it will bring one into.

Richard has been talking about it in the live streams he's been doing while mounting panels on VRLs. Yes, PT2399s and a complex analog switch matrix to get the 4 delays into the various configurations.

There is a lot going on under that panel.

I don't know how it sounds, or if there is point generally in these kind of delays, but it looks mighty fine!

Well, I did get a head start last fall, but still, I guess it was just wishful thinking...

Whelp, I just found out about this module and had to have it. I've long regretted selling my Pitts Analog Delay - I had one of the "good" units. Anyway, this sort of thing is totally my bag.

Edit: I got order #909. It's the little things, these days. :sb:

I've been in the loop during the whole development of the process locally and I think this thing came together wonderfully. It's a really crazy thing going on under the hood. Anyone else watch the livestream? I think Richard did a great job of covering all aspects of the module.

I watched it. I like that the module derives complexity from a straightforward architecture. Excited to experiment with it.

Looks like this delay is meant to be used for more unpredictable cases, which is something that appeals me a lot. While I now work more in a hybrid setting, I tend to use plugins for nice classic delays. Where this offers options that are interesting when you like to explore feedbacks and having multiple input options is always a good thing. I have to say I was intrigued by the new delay that is also built in to the VRL. Sounds dumb cause its a super simple delay but just feels good in a patch and the modulations are sweet.

Is this module widely available yet? I don't see it at the usual suspects (Perfect Circuit, Detroit Modular, ...).
