appreciate the effort jschussler but I think the comparisons would be a lot more informative if the audio you ran through all these distortions you have were already dynamic (eg VCA before the distortion) and already had low harmonic content (closer to sine or tri than already squared). simple bass drums work really well to tell the character of a distortion, IMO. just my 2c
THIS.

ps. appreciate as well but saw/square without filter-n-res could sound pretty much the same everywhere due to source material
pps. some laptop users could face some problems with audio playback of those comparisons

Crap, just realized I completely forgot to run the drums through these. Whups. Did that on some of the earlier ones, forgot this time.

The source audio is a saw wave, not square. Got dinged on that one earlier, so have been careful to stay away from squares. I'll try going even simpler next time, maybe tri.

Interesting idea about VCA first. I'll try that for the next batch.

Thanks for the feedback.
:tu: thanks for putting in the effort, it's especially helpful when pretty much all showrooms are closed.

Yes, it could be done better but thanks for making these jschussler. There's enough info to get at least some idea of the modules.

Let me ask you guys something. Do you use 100 Grit to a more mild distortion? Because everything I do with it goes wild pretty easily.

100 Grit isn't the first thing I think of when I want a mild distortion or saturation, especially given its main function as a filter. If I just want a little warm saturation, I usually reach for the Erica Synths Fusion Mixer. Excellent fine control over delicate saturation. For the next step up, I really like the Erica Synths Fusion VCA. It offers a bit more crunch than the mixer, but has lots of range before things get really fuzzed out.

My definition of mild saturation might be skewed, but 100 Grit can definitely do it. Don't touch the brass bits and keep all the feedback knobs down. It sounds more like a stompbox than a tape/tube type of saturation, though.

For mild saturation on the grit I'd use the "out" instead of "dist", keep all feedback down, and push either the input hard or the ota vca, both have transistor saturatation above 75%. The input will saturate asymetrically, and the output will do tri to sin conversion. :tu:

Schlappi gear in general
Malekko Megawave - plenty of tables to mess with and the input level/offset offer a wide range. simple squashed sounds to weird noise
Patch a compressor - env follower/comparator+env and vca with post gain will go a long way. Abuse accordingly

Goiks: A eurorack setup is a contemporary folk instrument. Relatively accessible and portable. Largely by, of and for the people.
