DFAM Sequencer Module

Post by waltergoschen » Fri Mar 20, 2020 8:07 am

Does anyone know of a (small, compact) module that works like the DFAM sequencer? That is, with eight (or 16) little knobs that you adjust for each step? It seems like such a basic/simple module functionality but I can’t find anything like that other than René, which is huge/expensive. Thank you!

The old Pittsburgh Modular Sequencer is only 8 steps & unquantized, but fits the bill:

Does it have to be a rack mounted module? If yes, please stop reading  If not, the Korg SQ-1 might be a possibility: Korg SQ-1

The 8s is probably the closest. For a bit more control/possibilities a couple XAOC Tirana II might work as well. Big and expensive there's the Verbos Voltage Multistage that does a ton more but is two rows of 8 (10v) CV sliders, see here :

My SQ1 is rack mounted, there is still room to add a 3u4hp module horizontaly and 2 trs jacks disting mk4 midi...a 1u26hp could also be mounted instead of the 3u4hp one.

I think is a dfam sequencer on steroids with two trigger/gates, polyrithms, slides, step jump...DFAM sequencer is a joke..

I wondered how that might look like but than I‘ve found your modular grid link in the signature. This is pretty cool :tu: is that available somewhere or a private DIY project?

I think your quest will be complete when you pop over to modular grid, click modules at the top, choose "sequencer" as the function and revel in the sheer variety of choices available to you.

It is not exactly that one, I used that one from modular grid as a reference. I just took the bottom part of the sq1 away and screwed two 90°black pvc plastic angles; they were cheap ( 3€) and almost the same size, still would fit a 3hp module. I have to look for the right ones ( one smaller than the other so there is room for a 5hp module). When properly finished top angle will have 2 trs inputs for disting mk4 midi in/out, SQ1 usb port and either a 3U3/5HP module or a 1U module like Intellijel 1U Noise Random Tools or similar.

Used this post as reference

I also used one like this so I can connect it to a 5v usb phone charger or to the computer via ableton

another vote for the SQ-1...they are cheap and versatile, and do what you are after

Its the best smallHP sequencer in eurorack but it seems only few people know or talk about it.

I thought it looked nice until I saw the price, 300€. You need two for 16 steps sequence...600€

That buys you a SQ1 and DFAM..
Of course if mone is not a problem look like a nice little sequencer..but gor the cost of one octone I would rather get two dnipro's

I dont have a lot of money, thats exactly the reason I bought the Octone. You will eventualy want to add features to your simple and cheap sequencer, like quantizing, variable step lenght, individual gate outs, racheting and so on and it will cost you more (money and HP) then buying Octone from the start. There is a saying: I am not rich enough to buy cheap :tu:

p.s. and its not a "nice little sequencer" but the best in its size. Prove me wrong.

Another recommendation on the SQ1.

Cheap and really flexible - can even be used as a basic clock divider, LFO, or envelope generator plus MIDI-CV converter.

Only downside is it can't be rack mounted without some innovative DIY - kudos to those who've managed it!

There are lots of powerful, interesting yet small sequencers; like prizma, euclidian circles, Pittsburgh Modular Game System etc...depending on your needs..

Big fan of Ladik! I think that combo ^ would give 8 steps x2 CVs. To have 16 steps of CV would need another S-180 and also a switch for the clock, I think...?

Yeah, a switch and a clock divider to switch between the two CV rows every 8 clock pulses.

Thanks a lot for everyone’s suggestions! Since I have so little room in my Palette case, I think I’ll get an SQ-1 for now and then get a rack-mounted one later when I have a bigger case.

I dont know if you have a dfam and are trying to get more steps out of your dfam.. but you can take the pitch row and the velocity out into a sequential switch, send that to vco in.. use a clock divider to trigger the sequential switch on /8 and you have a 16 step dfam
