Best eurorack drum sequencer 2020

Post by joey » Mon Apr 20, 2020 4:15 pm

hey everyone

so I've been sequencing drums in euro various ways (nerdseq, stillson hammer, octatrack + midi converter etc)

but never really delved deep into the dedicated trigger sequencers

i've seen some options from WMD, erica, tiptop etc

curious what your favorites are and why

which has the most power?

cheers :goo:

"Best" is very subjective, of course. The one the suits me is the SWT16+ by Robaux. I like the combination of the immediacy, the number of channels, the performance features, and the size.

I don’t have one, but seems that circadian Rhythms is a pretty good option

The best drum sequencers for eurorack are probably not in the rack :sstorm: Like ableton push combined with ES-9 or mmMidi, mutant brain etc.

That being said, I'm currently using Frap Tools USTA for all sequencing purposes complimented by pressure points (without brains) and mmMidi + mmT for more technical sequencing from Ableton. The USTA so far has been the sequencer that clicks with me the most. The workflow is super simple and just makes sense for my way of programming.

Metron is probably the most extensive Eurorack gate sequencer on the market, but there are lots of things it doesn’t do, and some things other gate sequencers undoubtedly do better.

Also, “drum sequencer”, “trigger sequencer” and “gate sequencer” can all mean slightly different things—or tilt in different directions—depending on who is talking. For example, the Erica Drum Sequencer is really focused on sequencing percussion voices with triggers and accents, whereas a module like Metron or Circadian Rhythms is conceived with more general purpose for triggering, gating, clocking, and otherwise controlling your patch over time.

Not really new, but the Tiptop Trigger Riot deserves a mention, especially the matrix mode and mute buttons make it very live-friendly once you get the hang of it. You can find it used on MG for under 300€.

Well, I'm still an Euclidean Circles fanboy, but from your initial options list I guess you're specifically interested in x0x-style step sequencing and that's really not what EC is good at.

ive got a marbles and grids already for that kind of vibe. EC does look nice though with the LEDS

There are a lot of great drum programming options in drum machines if you choose to combine them with a midi converter. Plus, you get to combine them with a lot of great drum sounds from those machines, if you like.

I have the Erica Drum sequencer and I really like it. Feature wise it's somewhate similar to the Digitakt sequencer : same probability options, micro timing, 64 steps, clock divider etc... the big keys really make it a joy to use. It's super easy, immediate and fun. The LFOs are super useful as well; the CV/gate track I never use as I find it a pain to program. I trigger drum voices and enveloppes with it, and use some outputs to clock sequencers creatively.

The only thing that bugs me is that the accent output doesn't work the same with all drum modules. it works fine with erica modules of course, but since it never goes back to 0V some other modules like tip top don't react well. I use another channel trigger for the few voices that need accents, but it's a bit of a shame. Also of note : clock out is erratic when you use midi in. I like that it has midi in though, makes it super easy to clock from ableton and record/overdub takes. If you use a trigger as a clock out it keeps everything in sync even when midi clocked though. All of these issues are mentionned in the dedicated thread I think.

Still I don't think I'd want to change. Metron looks super powerful but the buttons felt very tiny when I tried it (very quicly) in a shop. I think I'd miss the computer keys, integrated LFOs and midi in too much.

Depends on what sort of patterns you want to make.
Simple sequencers can do basically any pattern.
In modular land, I like to build a separate sequencer for each instrument out of a combination of clock divs, loopers, Euclids, manual programming, and chaotic cv.

Highly recommend max/msp for this, above anything else.

It depends on what you want to do. Although I use a Social Entropy Engine and a CV.OCD to do most of my sequencing, I really enjoy the different way of sequencing through the Trigger Riot and Grayscale Permutation (the big one with more gate outputs). I find the Intellijel Steppy to be a great way to supplement these for how little HP the 3U version takes up. I would say the Steppy paired with a logic module (or two) of your choice would supplement most of the non-traditional sequencers out there.

I do not own a Metron, but if I wanted an in-rack sequencer with a more familiar workflow, that would be the top of my list.

I like and use the Circadian Rhythms, but I can build entire songs and add accents into my Cirklon!

Delptronics Triggerman is my go-to but it only sequences gates and triggers. I find that the randomize functions and the super easy modification of patterns and clocking keeps it in just about every patch.

I use the Intellijel Steppy, Acidlab Robokop, and WMD Metron w/Voltera:
  • The Steppy is quite powerful for its size and the buttons are easy to hit. It has 4 tracks, 64 steps, ratcheting, clock division/multiplication, muting, minimal memory, etc. I use it when I’m sketching a song. In addition, I sometimes use a channel to mute notes from my Stepper Acid.
  • The Robokop is pretty much the controller from the Miami. It is limited to 16 steps with no A/B, but there is a song mode and plenty of memory. The panel is 50 HP, so it is good for live performance.
  • The Metron is the most advanced of the three with 16 tracks of 256 steps with triplets, ratcheting, muting, variable track lengths, trills, adjustable gate lengths, probability, logic, massive memory with disks, etc. While there is no song mode, each track has five variations that are easy to switch between.

Both the panel and buttons are small. Forget reading the labels and go with memory. Overall, however, it is easy to use, even though the buttons are small.

With the Voltera, you can use a track to create melodies and basslines. When you assign a note, every gate selected after it will be assigned the same value. For example, if you assign C3 to the first beat, each subsequent beat will contain C3. If you change the fifth beat to F3, then each gate afterward will contain F3. You can quantize to a user specified scale. It is really good for writing techno basslines.

You can also use the Voltera to send out voltages for modulation.

There is a new module coming out that adds accents and slew.

If I had to chose between all three, I would go with the Metron. My biggest complaint is that it is too small. Because of its size, it may not be so easy to use live unless you just cycle through programmed tracks.
