Sky Wiggling on the untouchable patch!

Post by Dcramer » Tue May 05, 2020 11:40 pm

In an effort to completely distance myself from everything I’ve had to resort to creating a patch that I can play without having to touch my modular. :cloud:
This way I’m completely safe from every possible calamity except maybe looking like an idiot while churning out dreaded burst music

The patch is based on three Doepfer antenna modules and a Doepfer light module.
It kinda looks like I’m playing a Theremin sort of thingy but it’s not that at all.
The whole patch is a pretty complex, 8 voice polyphonic generative affair that I’m merely influencing (like modulating the modulators) as I ‘cunduct it’ with hand gestures. As long as I’m standing close enough to it, it will start cycling in a steady way, but once I get my hands closer I can influence its speed and articulations. The various antennas are arranged in such a way as to be within each other’s ranges, meaning that even with only one hand I can control all three axis. Before I sourced enough antennas I tested the concept out with some Doepfer joysticks. I was surprised by how much practice it took to get some sort of meaningful results with it.
Cheers

Very cool stuff! The gestural controls give the performance an unmistakably human sounding expressiveness.

Are you sure that you are not waving your hands around while playing a pre-recorded song, I mean that sounds way too musical for it to be happening that way.
Kudos

Yeah, but can you do it while standing six feet apart? :foul:

(that was wonderful btw)

Lol, I know! When I first saw the footage that’s exactly what I thought! :hihi:
But when I’m playing it, it’s very responsive, you can see my right hand playing vibrato in the lead part.
If I just hold still, it will cycle like a clocked random patch, but wiggling around changes the timings.
When you hear a little phrase with a long, resolved pitch at the end, that’s simply my shifting my position and grabbing a note and making it sustain. :tu:

Very nice! A wonderful use of both ingenuity and technology!

I have been working in industrial automation for years now, and I had an idea for using laser sensors in a 3d array to map movement in a 3d environment to generate CV. Yes it would be complicated to set up, but imagine a dancer controlling a synth with dance movements in a 3d environment. The cost of the sensors stopped this idea at the gate unfortunately, but it is in the nature of what you have accomplished, so I thought I'd share the idea at least.

That sounds like a really neat idea, a big sensor net
.
That would even work with firearms as control input, wouldn't it...Doh!!

Yeah, as I work on it some more I’ll put up some info on how it’s patched.
:despair: Yup, sadly this is the week I was scheduled to fly into Estonia with a portable version of my Sky Wiggling weirdness for an artist residency, now I’ve been stuck inside, working from home, eating my troubles away :waah:

I'm really impressed with the control of your hand movements, it really shows how to turn a modular into an expressive musical instrument.
