Recommendations/wisdom about CV (DC-coupled) VCAs?

Post by Bachelard » Thu May 21, 2020 2:09 pm

Hi all,

Wondering if anyone has recommendations for particularly good DC-coupled VCAs? I'm finding more and more often wanting to use my VCAs to control my modulations. I have a Doefper A-135-2 which is DC-coupled, and most channels are used for my audio sources. I also have a Frequency Central Dual XVCA, which has 4 channels split into 2 groups of 2 channels with separate outputs, so I use one group for audio and the other group for CV but I don't think that one is DC-coupled - the signal gets slewed or something.

I have enough attenuator/verter/mixer modules (Frap Tools 321, Flipanda, Triatt), but when I use them I'm often thinking "gosh it would nice to have CV inputs on them."

Thanks.

I like the Happy Nerding 3xVCA for CV control. The offset is nice, because then it can be dialed in to not close fully when the control voltage is down to 0V, which I like for CV control. The attenuverter on the control voltage (when negative, the VCA closes as the control voltage increases) and the mixing are handy as well.

Hello. I like Tangle Quartet and Veils.

The Happy Nerding 3xVCA is indeed extremely handy, affordable, and low hp. Hard to beat the VCA to hp ratio on it too.

Ring modulators are also really great for processing your CV since you can automate inversion of your signals in addition to amplitude. Mutable Blinds is a great quad unit, and I personally really like Befaco's A*B+C since it can also apply static offsets and boost signals to +/-2 gain. Doepfer makes some good, inexpensive options as well.

I'll second Happy Nerding 3xVCA, got two of them.

I guess you could always wait for the A-130-8.

Brilliant. Thanks for all the insight!

Brilliant idea about ring mods...I did use to have an Intellijel uMod (mk1) that I loved sending CVs through.

For a quad DC-coupled VCA in a reasonable amount of space, the intellijel quad vca, mutable veils, and alm tangle quartet are probably the “standard” choices. I’ve only used the intellijel of the three, but they all use the same op-amp chip and are largely similar in application.

The Zlob Vnicursal VCA is 6 DC-coupled VCAs in 8HP. I have one, it's great
