Verbos vs Moog Oscillators?

Post by Joonathan » Tue Sep 15, 2020 12:16 am

Can someone with knowledge of both, describe to me the difference in sound, between something like a Verbos Foundation Oscillator, and something like the Moog Grandmother oscillators? Might be others from either side, but I'm curious about those two in particular. And I'm talking raw sound, not functionality.

Thank you ๐Ÿ‘

I don't own the Foundation but it's base on the core of the Complex and Harmonic oscillator so I can compare with my Grandmother.
For me the Moog sound more bassy and "full".

I'll record a few waveform for you if you want.

You are a true gentleman :) That would be lovely, if you have the time. Also, could you pick a favourite, if you had to, or is that entirely context-based?

Here you go :

Can't say I like one or the other more, totalmy different beasts. I'd say the Moog vco are very good in a Moog context as they are more fat and juicy so they work very well as pure raw sound generator, as well as food for filters.
The Verbos VCO (and any Buchla based complex VCOs I guess) are more little instruments by themself, so many sound can be obtained from the waveshaper out.

Make sure you download the file and listen to the wavs instead of just stream it on Soundcloud ;-)

Thanks again - just had a listen on proper speakers. The difference is more subtle, than I would have thought, but I hear som interesting nuances in the Verbos. Might have to make a little room.. ;)

Have you checked the sawtooth out on the harmonic oscillator? That is one full and beefy saw! more than the one in the Verbos Complex Osc. The interesting thing about the V.CO is in how delicate and sweet it sounds with high notes, and the organic, almost wooden character of it's crossmodulation. Though it can do plenty bass, and certainly isn't lacking in the sub region of the spectrum.

And I havn't played with to much knobs, or FM, or AM between the two. The Amplitude Modulation is probably the most interresting feature of this guy, especialy using the sync, so many weird timbres to get out of this. The weird bass line from 2.25 in this track is what i'm talking about :

Thanks for the video, will listen later ๐Ÿ‘ What is your experience regarding power for Verbos? I have some rather low quality cases, with switching power supplys, and from what I gather, Verbos might be sensitive to that?

That's a very cool bass line melody!
What's doing the 303 sound at 1:50?

The bassline at 1.50 if simply from my old Xoxbox ! There might be a bit of drive on it (probably the Elysia Karakter 500).

I never had problems with power with Verbos modules but I always used 4MS power suplies.
