PHmk3/E352 - wavetables from Buchla 259e twisted waveform generator

Post by StrangeAttraction » Fri Sep 18, 2020 5:13 am

Hello
This post might also fit into Buchla forum, but I'm looking for Buchla 259e wavetables that can be imported into something like PHmk3/E352.
I love the sound of the Buchla 259e twisted waveform generator...yet I'm knee-deep in euro and would rather not sell my kidney in order to build a small Buchla case.

If you have any and wouldn't mind sharing, that'd be absolutely fab!

If you have the ability to create wavetables all you have to do is generate waveforms from 1st order and 2nd order Chebyshev polynomials. The 259e wavetables are derived from Chebyshev polynomials.

Chebyshev polynomial-based waveform generators can be fairly easily built in Reaktor, Max/MaxforLive, PD, etc.

I actually posted looking for these a few months back in one of the e352 threads. If you find any or are able to make them some how please share here!!

Softube make a 259e plugin, officially licensed by Buchla & approved by Todd Barton. You could try generating wavetables using that.

If you can create wavetables from images of waves, the 259e wavetables are graphically represented in the Softube modular manual.

We probably already have most of the essential shapes somewhere or another, and it’s just a matter of identifying them, then cherry-picking them.

The exceptions would be the source code wavetables,

I’m guessing the 259e is a much lower resolution gizmo.

They are not common waveforms, they are algorithms for warping sinewaves. The warp shapes are derived from Chebyshev polynomials.

Apart from sampling the actual hardware, Softube might be the next best source to get these tables from.
I think three of them are code-generated in situ, in vivo.
Stupid question...but what's the best way to sample the waveforms? Eg. would you play a particular note/frequency for best resolution?
I dunno, never sampled waveforms before.

If you just want the static sound of one of the particular wave shapes, you could sample it, but this isn’t going to capture the 259e sound at all.

The wave tables in the 259e are used to warp, or wavefold, a sinewave. As you increase the amplitude of the sinewave using the warp function, the degree of warping, or wavefolding increases which results in increased harmonic content in the warped sinewave. To really capture this sound you will need multiple samples at various warp settings from lowest sinewave amplitude to highest sinewave amplitude to capture the full range of timbres produces by the 259e.

Someone said that they had these wavetables in a thread here and I asked him how he made them but received no answer....

Yeah, I think I saw the same thread already and there was no response from the person, so assumed they didn't want to share the waveforms...oh well.
