Mixer AND multitrack audio interface?

Post by LDT » Sat Sep 19, 2020 4:06 am

I think the answer to the following question is no, but I just want to be 100% sure that I have not missed something.

Is there a module, that works as multitrack audio interface (for computer), but ALSO as a simple mixer? (Minimum requirements for mixer would be a volume knob pr channel. And minimum 8 channels.)

I think the nearest you will come is the es9 plus something like this if you can work out how to setup the midi between them

edit added:

or you could just patch attenuators before the es9 maybe this

Does it have to be eurorack? There are a ton of options if you look for standalone units.

I agree with Agawell. The closest thing I can think of is es9. It doesn’t have faders on it. The es9 configuration software does have faders for mixing. You can also run it in standalone mode where it isn’t connected to a computer and mixes based on what you have previously configured. I have been using it as a headphone out for a while.

A MODULE? WTF?
What you want is a Tascam Model 24, 16, or 12. I have the 24, love it, got the 12 to try out while traveling, and really like it also, but think I'm going to sell it in a month when I return home fully and keep the Model 24. Totally changed the way I work, all/any of them.

I would look outside the rack. Sound Devices MixPre series - HP filter on each channel, pan, limiter - perhaps one of the Zoom boxes.

You might want to check out the K-Mix from Keith McMillen. It's not a module but still pretty compact. I've used one for a couple of years.

No computer interface but a mixer module with direct outs would let you have your mix and multitrack it too. The Xaoc Praga, the Hexmix with expander, or the Performance mixer with the DB25 expander all come to mind. If you mean a strict in the rack device that does it all then probably not. An interface like the MOTU 8A will do what you want and it handles Eurorack levels with ease and can even be used as a CV interface if you desire.

Thanks everybody. There is no such module. No worries, case closed.

Currently using the individual channel outs on my Befaco Hexmix/Hexpander to go into an ES6. That SORTA does the trick, although it doesn't capture the aux sends.

The SSP actually might be able to do this.

I've been considering one for this exact purpose. If comparing to audio interfaces alone with that many channels it's actually not that bad price wise for 16 ins.

Edit: and recently someone named thetechnobear made a performance mixer vst for it: https://forum.percussa.com/t/pmix-perfo ... nobear/990

Just an update: Meanwhile I have gotten a Faderfox EC4 for controlling FH-2 stuff, and then I realised the other day, that there is a FW update coming, that gives you midi CC control over volume and pan for the 14 inputs on ES-9. So I just ordered an ES-9, which will become my only mixer in my euro system, and off course provide 14 channels into my macbook.
Only worry: I will be over-taxing my power supply a bit. ES-9 is one hungry module. 😮

good luck with that - probably time for a new psu and/or case then!!!

The solution might be an additional psu. I actually have an endorphin.es 2hp power module that I was going to sell, but that might come in handy for providing power for the ES-9.

Everyone saying it’s a lot to ask for in one module, but honestly I’m surprised this doesn’t exist. It would just be a eurorack version of something quite ubiquitous - at its simplest a normal mixer with USB out.

Or you can use a standalone MIDI controller in place of the in-rack MIDI controller. I think the firmware on ES-9 to support this is in beta right now.

Edit: those would run around $800-$1000

I posed this question / concept to intellijel a while ago... doubt anything would come from it. So I’m designing and building my own

Excellent! Well, if you’re taking requests I’m basically looking for an 8-channel Focusrite Clarrett in eurorack format... in 8hp :-)

This was the original idea posted a while ago on Intellijel forum.. I was thinking 1U format. Original was thunderbolt connection, but now thinking standard USB. 8 Channels works fine over USB.

The idea is that these 8 channels could be selectable inside your DAW of choice, or I could definitely add some configuration buttons on the panel for sub mixes. It was all a thought, however might consider this more of a serious solution for some.

Maybe a 4 hp 3U config... 8 Channels, USB, buttons. All ideas atm.

This would be fantastic. I’d love an ADAT version as well. Maybe a mult expander to send a copy to the DAW while keeping everything in the rack the same could be cool.
