if only Doepfer had done this
How cool would the Doepfer modules have been, had they only chosen German terms instead of English on their modules. Just look at these words:
- Dreieck
- Sägezahn
- spannungsgesteuertes Tiefpaßfilter
- Dreieck
- Sägezahn
- spannungsgesteuertes Tiefpaßfilter

Re: if only Doepfer had done this
Not really... had the english labelling been the precise translation of those words, it had been more or less the same length:
Triangle
Sawtooth
Voltage controlled low pass filter
But it would have been a different flair, for sure. For the probably very few people who might have preferred it that way.
Then again, "CV" could have been "SS" (Steuerspannung), and that abbreviation is somewhat tainted. I'm fine with english labelling after all.

Re: if only Doepfer had done this
Thinking about it, it's probably even more German to have named all of the modules something like A-110, A-111-5 or, on a night of mad inspiration, something as wild as A-174-4.
Re: if only Doepfer had done this
Hehe.
Keep in mind that Germany has a long history of electronic music, going back to the world's probably first electronic music studio, the Studio für elektronische Musik in Cologne.

Me and some friends helped an Egyptologist friend of ours move house once. We were convinced that books written in German weigh more than other languages.
Re: if only Doepfer had done this
Ah, but you see, they have this 7-segment logo. If they used German labelings they'd have to call themselves DÖPFER, since that's what Dieter's last name is. Unfortunately there's no way to make the Ö letter look good in 7-segment font.
I don't think any of their modules uses the actual words, be they "triangle" or "Dreieck", rather than the shapes as ideograms?modules have been, had they only chosen German terms instead of English on their modules. Just look at these words:
- Dreieck

Here's a fun fact about the German langauge. The word spannungsgesteuertes in your post follows the rule for neuter inflexion. Literally every person who uses the German word Filter as neuter is a synth nerd. In all non-synth contexts Filter is masculine.- spannungsgesteuertes Tiefpaßfilter

That is hilarious! Must forward to my friends in Munich (but they are probably sick to death of it - and will have an equivalent video for Australian English).
Re: if only Doepfer had done this
Definitely an oldie but a goody!!
Working out the filter... tief is Deep.. is it a deep pass filter? (I’m learning german and always excited to learn in the real world as opposed to duolingo!

Gum is fun, but not on a cat.

A-einhundertsiebenunddreißig.
Could be worse though. Dieter could be French.
Actually, they'll enjoy the change of pace from having their German mocked by non-Bavarian Germans.
Well, if you're deep under water you're pretty low above ground level.
Re: if only Doepfer had done this
THAT makes total sense now! Deep/Low.
Thanks so much!

Re: if only Doepfer had done this
Well, it`s A-110-6 or Quadratur-Trapezoid-basierter spannungsgesteuerter Oszillator mit linearer Nulldurchgangsmodulation

Re: if only Doepfer had done this
That's what I mean. If that was printed on the module I would definitely buy it. But I like German.andybizarre wrote: ↑Wed Sep 23, 2020 11:17 amWell, it`s A-110-6 or Quadratur-Trapezoid-basierter spannungsgesteuerter Oszillator mit linearer Nulldurchgangsmodulation![]()
Re: if only Doepfer had done this
I'm German but if I had to choose I'd go for Cyrillic labelling. I love the aesthetics of the Polivoks. I'm from former West Germany. So I don't understand a single Russian word BTW.

Re: if only Doepfer had done this
Yeah, but it needs to be straight Cyrillic. I`m former East german, had to learn Russian in school and I can`t stand semi-Cyrillic pseudo western product names.
So, I was working hard to bring you guys another one: The A-101-6 would be "sechsstufiges spannungsgesteuertes Filter mit lichtempfindlichen Feldeffekt-Transistoren". Herrlich.
Re: if only Doepfer had done this
Sovtek Big Muff clones are the worst, having bad taste lettering and bad taste graphics quite often.andybizarre wrote: ↑Thu Sep 24, 2020 3:59 amYeah, but it needs to be straight Cyrillic. I have several Eowave modules, they're in French. Too bad some of them are so hard to get, I wanted the regular VCA, but it's been discontinued.

Re: if only Doepfer had done this
"Doppelhaushälfte" -> half of a double house (aka. "semi-detached house"). Also those test equipment wigglers seems to have a lot of fun ... e.g. "Programmierbarer Impulsgenerator"

Re: if only Doepfer had done this
well I am naming modules after hoods & places in my birthplace Leipzig (more precise in the west of Leipzig) so I am eagerly waiting to call one of my creations after the hood of Zschocher or more precise Kleinzschocher or Großzschocher - try pronouncing that correctly

btw. German is only my second language .. I am native Saxonian. (Germans will get that joke)

Good one ... a friend of mine gets super mad when someone uses it wrong.
