Best sequential switch?

Post by mixxalot » Thu Oct 01, 2020 7:47 pm

Hi folks,

I am looking to spice up my patches with a solid sequential switch and looking at Doepfer quad switch, ALM Boss Bow Two and Instruo Tain. What others would you recommend that would let me switch the maximum number of routing options?

Stages is dope. Could be a 6-stage switch or less than that and a myriad of other things. Can also glide between the stages and add offsets with the sliders.

There’s the WMD Sequential Switch and the SSSR Labs Matrixarchate as well.

How many sources would you like to connect to how many destinations? And do you need cv and/or manual control?

I have the Doepfer A-151 and it is great. But depending on what you want to do, it might not be the one for you.

I’ve got the Ladik 4 way sequential switch which is awesome and very simple and also the 8 way Erica synths v1. Also awesome although takes up a bit too much space for the amount it gets used.

WMD SSM is the bad boy, i also like the erica synths pico seqs for its small sizedness, the doepfer one is good too just a shade bigger than the pico with a few extra options...

Have you looked into the multi-switch algorithm in the disting ex? It's wild

Stages is great for this function. I use it more often as a sequential switch / sequence transposer than as an envelope generator.

+1 for Stages.
Also worth mentioning is Klavis Mixwitch (especially for audio), it offers 4 channels, is pretty cheap and the switch is CV addressable / has a random function.

I just got the Doepfer A-152 which is obviously much more than a sequential switch, and is probably not what you're looking for. But it might be worth considering - I think it holds a lot of potential. I'm actually considering adding a A-151 too, to allow sequential switching of the CV control signal, or for independent use

I also love Stages! And have just bought some new envelopes to free it up more easily for its other functions. What do you mean in terms of gliding between the stages?

The Erica Synths Pico SEQS (not to be confused with Pico SEQ) is quite small for what it does.
The extra 1hp allows you to use a 1hp blank panel to make the 3hp wide module usable.
no wait, that requires a 1hp panel on each side, or 5hp total. :hmm:

I had a Doepfer A-151 v2 which was a great sequential switch. Simple, easy to use and just works.

I now have a Pico SEQS which is neat because you can cv control the number of steps to switch thru instead of a manual switch like the A-151. And it's only 3hp.

Stages blows my mind with how much it can do. Not sure about the other options out there, but if you're looking for a module that can double up on other duties as well, it's worth a look.

RYO PATHS!
The WMD SSM seems great but overkill for me. RYO is everything i need, and has a great straight forward and playable interface.

4:4 switches are so much more fun and soooo many more patch possibilities than 1x4 or 1x whatever.

In the orange Step segment mode, the SHAPE/TIME potentiometers control the glide amount, which basically is like a slew or smooth transition from the current value to the next value. If you want it to just jump to the next one, set the pot fully counter-clockwise.

Why not just get 3 or 4 Doepfer A-151-2 @ $60 each and put them when and where you need them? Gives you a lot of flex.
Add a few doepfer Mults also cheap.

I use A151's but also Antumbra Path which is brilliant, basically 2x4 or 1x8 in 6hp and does a number of things. You can run one side sequentially & the other side as random or link the two sides together to do 8 steps sequentially or random, it has other modes but can't think of them off the top of my head.

Ah yeh I see! Thanks very much for explaining. This is also shown in Divkid's great tutorial isn't it, which I just revisited

As you said at the start, with those offset and glide functions Stages has a lot to offer as a sequential switch

Thinking about it, I guess this functionality is also available in the Doepfer A-155 sequencer, that second row of CV with the inputs + glide. Although Stages allows varying slew on each individual step and they're obviously very different modules

Ah no I just checked the A-155 manual and the knobs become attenuators rather than offsets if external cv is patched into the given step. Which is kind of interesting in itself when thought of as a switch

It's a toss between the Doepfer A-151 v2 and the CGS 28 Sequential Switch for me. I had an Erica Synths SEQS, but it wasn't exactly what I was looking for. The A-151 v2 is straightforward and easy to use, the CGS 28 adds complexity - and can also be used as a standard 8 step sequencer.

I love the ALM Boss Bow Tie Two. I couldn't ask for anything more from a switch.. it's excellent.
