Doesn't the planar2 include CV recording?

Re: Which Joystick brings you joy?
The A-174-4 has some extra features not found in the Planar 2, most specifically it outputs a third dimension of CV, which is generated by rotating the joystick. It also uses pots to generate an offset for each dimension, as opposed to the Planar 2’s bipolar/unipolar switches, so you can have some finer control if you prefer.Electro Something wrote: ↑Sun Apr 04, 2021 11:48 pmIs the Planar2 worth the extra $140 from the Doepfer A-174-4V? Trying to decide between the two.
Does it all come down to whether or not you want a spring in your joystick?
I also understand that the A-174-4 is still unreleased, and given the current global shortage of electronic components, I expect it won’t be available anytime soon. Also, I wouldn’t rule out the possibility that they change the specifications on the finished product. Its original release date was last summer or thereabouts, and they delayed it to change some of its features based on user feedback, so its feature set may still be in flux.

Re: Which Joystick brings you joy?
They actually hit dealers' shelves a couple months ago. I bought two A-174-4Vs about a week apart from the initial shipment. Now they're sold out everywhere again. Yeah—you get Z-axis control by rotating the stick—that's the feature which made me decide to pull the trigger on the Doepfers. They're very deep (and very tall!), but do fit into a 4ms pod64x powered-skiff, just barely (just make sure you get the 'X' pod). I love 'em!

It’s definitely worth the extra. XY recording, joystick stays where you leave it, really versatile VCA options for panning, distribution, scanning, etc.

Yes, in silver. "Vintage" (black-panel) is still out-of-stock. Looks wicked-cool in black!

Re: Which Joystick brings you joy?
I actually just ordered the vintage version of the Doepfer from Nightlife in Canada last week. Looks like they still have it in stock if anyone is looking.
Re: Which Joystick brings you joy?
Does the Doepfer 'knob' of the joystick unscrew or anything to allow for being put into travel cases? It seems so huge and it doesn't seem like they could work in any cases with a lid, but that also seems weird that they wouldn't have planned for some solution given how many people travel with their cases for live performance.
Re: Which Joystick brings you joy?
Good to see the Doepfer fits in that case. I really like the inverted outs right on the module. I plan to have a pair of triple attenuators nearby as well. I wish they had put four holes on the faceplate for mounting though.
Just used the code at Detroit to pick one up.

Re: Which Joystick brings you joy?
Well, I do not own a joystick, so this creates interesting doubts about this question.

I have a Befaco joystick which is ok but want a Planar 2 that is super awesome! Probably after I get my monster case and move things around and at the next sale the planar 2 will be a must buy for me. Used one at friends' place and had so much fun using it.

Lol...you guyz are talking cocks!NeolithicElectrophones wrote: ↑Wed Nov 04, 2020 8:23 pmCan't say Iv'e tried it yet, but a friend told me that in case of no spring, a plug in the bottom jack helps keep the joystick at center.Jumbuktu wrote: ↑Wed Nov 04, 2020 8:15 pmAs I get further past age 65, this sounds so familiar.NeolithicElectrophones wrote: ↑Wed Nov 04, 2020 7:08 pmAbsolutely prefer no spring in mine. But i'll take a spring return to center stick over a stick that slowly moves down if it's at a 45 degree or larger angle.
In other news I also do not own a joystick either so this thread comes at a perfect time! Aside from contemplation of the latest complex oscillator du jour, I'm pretty much one in, one out. But other day it dawned on me that I could do with a small case with a stick, deffo want a lightplane, manual switches (latching and otherwise) to add something organic to the deep programming I'll be doing.

Re: Which Joystick brings you joy?
A Joystick with a spring return can always be patched into a Track-and-hold module (many sample and hold modules can be jumpers into track and hold) and the current position held by them. of course they will "jump" to the new location when you want to change things.

Re: Which Joystick brings you joy?
Indeed, once the Doepfer gets here (tracking indicates Monday) I plan to regularly patch it through a select 2.
