If the "snap back to 0V" feature is important to you, there are other controllers that will do this easily. Doepfer and Analogue Systems make pitch-bend and mod wheel modules, there are plenty of touch strip type modules that can do this (though most s/h the last position), and there are FSR (Force Sensing Resistor) modules out there too (*self interest alert* - I make a couple of FSR based modules). Everyone should have a bunch of controllers in their rigs.

Just so it's clear: If you record Planar2 with the joystick in the middle/at zero and let it play, pause it, wiggle away, with the stick and when you're done and want to "snap back to zero" you simply press play again. Remember to have the ABCD/XY buttons lit and nothing patched to the CV 1 or 2 (then the recording of "zero" will be routed to the output instead of the joystick position).

Alternatively you could also just unlit the ABCD/XY button with nothing patched to the cv 1 or 2in as Planar2 then sends a static zero volt out.

Of course it doesn't move the joystick mechanically if you really need that.

I have the erica black joystick, with no spring. I use it mostly as a playable cv mixing attenuverter, which I guess is what it is. I feel like having a spring in it would make it a more unique module and really expressive/playable, but maybe a bit more limited as well.

Overwhelmingly, wrigglers seem to prefer “stays put”. I’m surprised. I’m looking at the Flame JoyRec because I want fast triggers (on X coord) and modulation (on Y coord), then a quick return to zero.

Also like the CV recording option much.
Yep, cv recording on the flame is awesome. Not to mention looping, restarting etc. I wanted a planar so bad but it was too big for my rack, but now I’m really happy I went for the flame.
Thanks for your 2 cents. I was hoping someone would chime in about the FLAME JOYREC.

The Doepfer A-174-4 seems to be available now (at least the black one) -> A-174-4@Thomann

But it is quite huge ... 50 mm deep and the stick is 70 mm high :deadbanana:

. . . I'm too damned lazy today to shoot a picture so I'll just go with the current accepted status quo of posting a Modular Grid "rack" of all my bitchin shit ... cuz I'm a bitchin kinda guy ... with bitchin shit.
Since you're such a bitchin' guy maybe you can help! I was all set to buy two Planar² joysticks, and then I discovered (the much cheaper) Lightplane. What to do? I bought a bitchin' 4ms pod64x explicitly to make a control-skiff to house, originally, two Planar² joysticks and a Tetrapad, quite an expensive proposition. But then, Lightplane to the rescue! I'm primarily making machine-noises, spaceship-engines, and robot-voices, if that helps. I'll re-read your post and try to absorb the pros and cons again, but my mind is swirling . . . Planar² or Lightplane???

I couldn't really understand the reason for such a large joystick until I watched the videos.

i believe there’s a new erica one with recording features

i really want the new doepfer one... in black :) looks like it would be a huge modulation source and a potential heart of a system

I didn't watch this video but it sure looks like it isn't going to work very well -if at all- with those modules on either side of it actually patched.

The hand position seen in the vids preview photo would be impossible if the jacks under it were patched.

edit typo

Earlier in the thread the corners unavailable to a circular travel JS were brought up.

Is there any value to have a clipping function to turn the circle of this kind of stick into the square available with the type Rex Coil 7 posted <--in the dotcom panel?

One could move the stick in a circle and the output would be 'square'.

Planar2 is awesome but personally I wouldn't by two of them. I'd rather go for a tetrapad (+tete maybe) or the new Erica Black Joystick2 (which looks like an awesome second joystick to compliment Planar2). The Doepfer has some really nice tricks but I would rather have an Expressive E Touche on the side instead. The Doepfer looks platicky and too big when everything is patched up

This is my current current controller skiff. I have both a Planar2 and a Choices in it. I have be thinking moving the FOH Power module and making a larger version of the Trunk-16 module in the 2" space above the rows. If I do that then that panel space opens up I may add a second Planar2, but a light plane or other controller would be nice for variation. Having a collection of different controllers often stirs creativity in me, so the more the merrier.

When's Planar2 gonna be available again? The Doepfer A-174-4V looks nice, should even barely fit in a 4ms Pod--X case.

I think Analogue Haven has a Planar 1 on sale still if you want to go that route

Is the Planar2 worth the extra $140 from the Doepfer A-174-4V? Trying to decide between the two.
Does it all come down to whether or not you want a spring in your joystick?
