Single module awards here are :
Waverazor is just a born droner ( but not only ) with up to 10 parameters for each oscillator model
Shapeshifter then GVCO for harsher tones
E370, messing with FM / sync then Planar 2 / X - Pan can keep up you busy for quite some time :hihi:
Morphagene !
No noticeable overlaps ...

Doepfer quad LFO/VCO.
mutable insteuments BRAIDS with the Renaissance firmware.
Rings or elements as effects,
TIDES,
But most importantly, FRAMES. The most underrated module ever for evolving modulation that you can actually "play".
I know, I know... Mutable fanboy, but hey, it works.
Oh, and Music Thing Chord organ....
I always think about adding chords To My drones. Till now i use my tidesv2 in chord mode but it annoys me that i cant use it as lfo then. So i was thinking about chord Organ.
How does it work in your drone setup?
It's great, especially for the price, but mine is back to being a Radiophonie. Once you try the Renaissance firmware of BRAIDS, there in not much else that would satisfy you☺️
EDIT: the four outputs of TIDES v2 going into FRAMES as a cv controlled mixer is where you want to be. Those two love each other...

Worng Vector Space
Planar 2
a couple of slow LOF's (I use a Bubblesound and a SE STE.16)
Rubicon syc'd to another osc.
SE SEM filter

Vector space provides CV for voices with one LFO into i and the other k, Planar 2 provides offset at j

How do you go about modulating matter? I find the lack of tweakablility in matter to be a source of frustration.

Akemie's Castle is a drone beast, all the chords and multipliers open up a ton of possibilities, plus the tuning is all locked in between the different oscillators, one less thing to worry about.

not to toot my own horn too loud but my diode chaos is also good for subtle interrelated chaotic fluctuating voltages
Toot that horn. Diode Chaos is a great varying voltage source in a small package.

imo all you really need is a couple oscillators and a mixer with phase inverting inputs to play with phase cancellations
yea i was going to say this. im surprised it took 3 pages before someone did. thats my favorite way to make drones with 2 or more triangle or sines slightly detuned with a subtle fluctuating random voltage to one or both pitches to have them beat in and out.

...

not to toot my own horn...
I'll toot it since I never tire of doing so: Zlob Dual VCO is two of those oscs in a small (through hole! FWIW) 4hp package for that beating sound, or for audio-rate modulation to add harmonics to your drone. (My two main uses of them.) Its imperfect wave forms are a draw for me, since they add some interest and variety. The fine tune is *actually* a fine tune for dialing in just the right beating rate, and they stay stable over time. I've got two. :cloud:
thanks guys, im happy you like them and use them for this very topic. nice, thats what i use my dual vcos for too. yea they are also capable of some interesting fm beating/interaction as well. which i didnt mention in my earlier post, as that technique applies to most vcos for a kind of harsher type of pitch beating.

Can’t speak for mkII but the original does a bang up job with making things sound nice and toasty. I’ve been know to use it as an end of chain character adding tool.

If you patch more than one pin per matrix it starts to drone and with the potentiometer you can fade between two matrixes. I really like it because every pin affects every other pins.

Thats kind of a happy accident machine

While I don't have Frames, I do have Blinds, and I'm  for not thinking of pairing Tides 2 with it! Thanks for the spark.

My personal approach is to use a 4ms Spherical Wavetable Navigator (which you could use as well as a standalone voice as you don't really need anything else) through a Make Noise QPAS as a main voice and an Instruo Arbhar to add extra layers.
As modulation sources i use a Befaco Rampage (not in every patch), an Instruo x Divkid Ochd and a Xaoc Zadar - no need to say that the Zadar has been a game changer, it really opened up a new world of sonic possibilities.

I am planning to add a Data Bender and an Erica Synths Plasma Drive to my system some time in the future; feel free to share a feedback on them!

psst.. the parasites firmware for frames has a quad wavetable lfo - and when you turn voltage offset off - is a mixer with built in wavetable control :guinness: my frames hasn't left that mode, except for the few times i used the euclidean envelope setting.

Cyclebox,
Cursus Iteritas,
Cwejman RES-4,
Erica Stereo Delay,
maybe Plaits
and a lot of modulators.

:foul: I really don't have the :75: to read stuff like this right now!!! I had conveniently forgotten about Frames' Parasites firmware possibilities.

Tides 2 as an oscillator with two channels sent to Warps Parasites and some gentle modulation to both modules is instant easy drone awesomeness.

Been experimenting with formant synthesis on Maths, like how Mangrove works, while I wait for Mangrove stock. Some of the most amazing drone sounds when you modulate the rise/fall time and get pitch subdivisions.

For me:

-MN Telharmonic
-MN contour
-MN Dynamix
-MI Warps as alt to Cont/Dyna
-MN Qpas
-any good delay/reverb
-any good mod source

Note: I had to edit my first post here since it was kind of "off." Now that I know a bit more, it makes more sense. Sorry for the dumb suggestions! Just re-read the entire thread to re-visit everyone's ideas . . .

Some specific examples of modules I like for drone and why:
-Tides 2 for slow, related, modulatable modulations.
Yup! Been thinking real hard about adding Tides (or μTides for space).

Oh, awesome! I already have a Mutable Warps! Just need Tides now.

Very interesting! I have a lot of speech/formant modules and a couple of Contour 1s. Haven't tried that combo yet.

Yeah, I really have to take a closer look at Frames. Also getting a couple Doepfer quad-LFOs (mainly for panning).

swn = Spherical Wavetable Navigator by 4ms
Bionic Lester mk3 is a drone beast with the slow fade across presets
These are some great suggestions. I agree that muff's could use a drone zone.
