What's up with Pittsburgh?

Post by thelowerrhythm » Sat Jan 02, 2021 3:29 pm

Apologies if this is already discussed / widely known, but I went to FINALLY buy a second Primary Oscillator and they can't be found anywhere. Then I noticed a lot of Pittsburgh stuff can't be found. What's going on with them? :foul:

Thanks. I wasn't sure if this was affecting them or not. Thought maybe they were getting ready to release a bunch of new stuff and just discontinue everything.

Could be that too, I suppose... but more or less everyone is having a rough time right now.

Geographically, Pittsburgh is quite interesting, and it’s an affordable, livable mid-size city, even if the winters can be a bit oppressive. Lots of really cool housing stock (some is fixer-upper). Pittsburgh’s post-industrial present is colored by its industrial past. It has some good patina. The local population may be a little too enthusiastic about their professional sports teams, but YMMV.

I love the 'Burgh. Lived there for two years in the mid '90s. Go back every chance I get!

they certainly seem to have a thing for analog delays. Super excited about my Local Florist arriving!

(has anyone else in Euro made that many different analog delay modules? Analog Delay, Analog Replicator, the new Analog Delay from the VRL (and its separate-module form), the Cascading Delay Network, Local Florist, ... did I miss any?)

Their newer delay and the cascading network are in fact digital (PT2399 based), fwiw.

Local Florist is back to BBDs, though, I believe.

Pittsburgh is an interesting city. I grew up in there (spent 27 years in the ‘burgh before moving to the SF Bay Area and was a regular high school gawker checking out the gear I couldn’t afford at Pianos n Stuff). There are a surprising number of institutions of higher learning concentrated around the city including Carnegie Mellon, Univ of Pittsburgh, & Duquesne U to name a few, which contribute to it’s multicultural personality for a Midwest(ish) location. I’m not so up on how things are now, but when I was there- great dining - French, Burmese, Argentinian, Jamaican and a good selection in general - quirky neighborhoods like Southside, Strip District, Oakland, Shadyside and Squirrel Hill. It’s not a large metropolitan area but there are interesting places tucked into the hills around the city and an ~hour drive in many directions can put you into quiet isolation. Yah - I know this is about Pittsburgh Modular (located not far from where I used to live) but thought I’d give a shout out to my hometown.

In the email last month from Pittsburgh Modular which announced the Local Florist, they mentioned that they have been developing the Voltage Research Laboratory 2 synthesizer. The Local Florist was designed as part of it and they decided to release the Local Florist as a limited run standalone piece.

Very interested in the Voltage Research Laboratory 2!

I've not seen it yet. The one I am really hoping to see is the Bayernhof Museum.

I love the sound and philosophy of Pittsburgh, but they're also incredibly frustrating for me. Everything seems to be built on limited runs, and very little makes it over to Europe. I wanted one of those cascading delays, but apparently only 100 were made and I can't get hold of one for love nor money. I bailed on the Voltage Lab Mk 1 for financial reasons; I'm definitely getting Mk 2.
If at first you don't succeed read the instruction manual.

Although I can’t say for sure, I think they are discontinuing several modules. I emailed them about the dynamic impulse filter a month ago and they are apparently not producing it anymore. Primary oscillator may have met the same fate. The good news is that if you email them, they are very quick and courteous.

Lucky to have that company in my backyard!

I grew up in Pittsburgh - born on Polish Hill, raised on Mt. Washington. Left in '65 when I went away to college. Used to go back regularly to visit my parents but they both died about 18 years ago and I don't get down there as much any more - in fact it's been 3 years since I've even driven down just for a day trip.
