Cosmotronic Thru Zero Complex Oscillator - Teaser

Post by kybernetik » Mon Jan 04, 2021 11:00 am

Hi,

I'd like to share some info about our third module, coming somewhere in 2021! Picture below is a prototype, so panel will still change a bit, but it's mostly there! It's our take on the complex oscillator, fully analog, two independent VCO's, each with different timbral modulators.
There is no carrier and modulator in this set up, both VCO's are standalone. Internal normalizations make it easy to create complex patches inside the module. Both VCO's have excellent tracking and stability, external sync inputs (soft and hard sync), and CV and attenuverters for all parameters

edit- I added a poll to hear your opinion on a favoured layout:
Sliders mirrored, or duplicate

Layout out 1:
Image

Layout 2:
Image

An overview of the features:

Cross FM bus
  • Each oscillator has it's own Voltage Controlled FM bus
  • Both oscillators are capable of Thru Zero linear FM
  • External inputs for exponential and thru zero fm

Left VCO
The circuit is base on a modified version of a design by Barrie Gilbert from 1977, popularized by Open-Music-Labs (used with permission, many thanks!)
  • The first slider is a tri to saw shaper, that waveform then enters a sinewave shaper.
  • The second slider takes adds a sinusoidal wavefolder, which changes it's timbre dramaticaly based on the position of the previous slider.
  • The third slider adds Thru Zero Phase Modulation. The slider controls the depth of the modulation, normalized to the right VCO.
Of course it's also possible to use an external modulation signal.
  • The last slider is a 2-pole Low pass filter.
  • There is a main ouput, and a seperate tri/saw, pulse and sine out

Right VCO
This one has a different signal path
  • The first slider is a shaper from sine to tri to saw
  • The second slider adds Thru Zero Amplitude Modulation. The slider controls the depth of the modulation, normalized to the left VCO.
Of course it's also possible to use an external modulation signal.
  • The third slider is a wavefolder, it's based around a novel wavefolding topology.
  • The last slider is a 2-pole Low pass filter.
  • There is a main ouput, pulse, ampitude modulated sine and saw out
Specs:
26HP
+12v: 170mA
-12v: 170mA

Only thing missing is a good name :hmm: suggestions most welcome!

Here's a quick video showing a few of the features:

Very nice panel layout + UI — looks like a quick study and hearing lots of interesting sound design possibilities.

For a name—I wonder if the two VCOs each having a distinct personality (vs pre-configured in car/mod relationship) might lead somewhere. One idea that popped up is the idea of two planets or stars that orbit each other, take binary asteroids or stars (wikipedia quote):

"A binary star is a star system consisting of two stars orbiting around their common barycenter. … If components in binary star systems are close enough they can gravitationally distort their mutual outer stellar atmospheres."

And 'barycenter' is a new one to me, but might be a subtle nod to Barrie ;-)

Looks like a lot of possibilities at hand in this package. I really like the idea of having individual filters on board and the triangle to saw shaper on the left oscillator is a design choice I’d like to see more often.

Sure is a nice design as well.

Looks and sounds nice. I really like the panel layout and the sliders.

The way the two oscillators are asymmetric reflections of each other makes me think of chirality, especially with how the controls branch out from the middle. Maybe you could call it the Chiral Oscillator, or Chiral Frequency Generator or something.

sounds great my only thought is that i would want a bigger knob then a mini for the fine tune on an oscillator like this.

Will keep an eye out on this!

One suggestion: Get rid of as many of the Trim pots as possible and use mounted knobs instead. They don't have to be big - but at least they will be steady and somewhat nice to wiggle! I am not against trim pots in general (I'm grateful my Plonk has four) but I do think that 10 is excessive. I'd rather have 6-7 real knobs instead.

I can't be the only one who is turned off by having my modular filled with small trim pots?

Im not a fan either. You can get the trim knob toppers from thonk though. Beautiful sound design choices though! And overall great looking piece of kit! Congrats

Palindrone would be solid as it initially looks similar right to left and left to right.

as a deep fan of Cosmo's city's contributions to electro, it'd definitely warm my heart to see the module named in tribute to the Hague's musical history (just as Intellijel surely nodded to Drexciya with 'Springray' and 'Metropolis'). something like 'Moebius', or 'Attack Blue' :omg:

anyway, it looks brilliant! I love that it manages to cover expo FM, TZ linear FM, PWM, ring modulation, and especially phase modulation. didn't think anyone would be pulling all that off in less HP than the Brenso. the +/- octave switches are a thoughtful touch, too.

I agree that mounted pots would be ideal, though there doesn't look to be enough horizontal space for knobs wider than ~7mm in diameter. nice 10mm knobs could probably fit if the pots were more staggered in vertical positioning, and there might be a way to do that while keeping to the lovely symmetrical aesthetic. but I could totally live with trimpots—I make do with no fewer than 19 of them on my Brenso—and all the offset controls are nicely jammable through faders or big knobs.

that said, it would be even better if there were attenuators for the FM index CV. the module would need to be wider for that, but 28-30hp is standard business for COs. it's nice to set your expo and linear knobs just right and then squeeze a ton of variety out of the patch just by playing each oscillator's attenuator for the FM index CV.

lastly, the phase modulation audio sample sounds pretty scratchy. reminds me a bit of the Happy Nerding FM Aid when the sawtooth carrier's gain isn't properly calibrated. since this module's PM implementation has been inspired by the OML SineCore, might it do cleaner PM if you feed it a fully sawtooth-shaped wave (Shape slider at full height, not midway as in the video)?

really excited for this!

As much as I love coming up with clever names for things, I actually prefer boring, descriptive names for modules. I have a large system and I hate having to remember which [cool name] is the oscillator and which [cool name] is the filter.

That being said, something like the CosmoPlex Oscillator is fun while still reminding you what the thing is at a glance.

spontaneous idea for the name:

do-O

from two-"O"scillators ----> two-O -----> Do-O

"do", like "doing" , you know ;)
any other forums for "experimental electronic music making" or eurorack to consider ?
beside "lines" which was allready suggested
