Patching-up your own complex-oscillator: How are you making yours?

Post by studio460 » Tue Apr 06, 2021 3:41 pm

I bought a lot of multiples of VCOs, mostly in pairs, with this application in mind, and I also have four Tiptop Z3000s bought expressly to serve as modulation-sources. My go-to "complex-oscillator" (which doesn't even really qualify as one) is my Dreadbox Chromatic-series: x2 Hysteria VCOs + x1 Eudemonia VCF/VCA mix-up. For my homebuilt complex-oscillator needs, I grabbed two wavefolders, plus an SSF/WMD Blender:

• Joranalogue FLD6.
• SSF/WMD Ultrafold.

I also have two Noise Reap Paradox dual-VCOs which have internal cross-modulation, which will be my second "complex-oscillator." Also have a pair of Braids-clones for some digital madness. Still have yet to fully explore my Klavis Twin Waves.

Also, having too much fun with my single-VCO Synthesis Technology E352 and its built-in wavefolder to even think about buying a complex-oscillator. I was all hot on buying either a Mindphaser (still might), Brenso, or Endorphin.es, but now, I don't really see the need. Even the GAS for a Piston Honda has receded from my recent E352 fun. However, the Joranalogue Generate 3/Morph 4 combo is very hard to resist, but those will have to wait.

Curious to know what others are doing?

I sold my verbos cvco. So sad. I liked it but used it too little so I had to replace it with something new.
So now I’m also looking for an alternative. A bit cheaper thou. Then two of the same single oscillator is a smart approach.

E370 for now.

A pair of Generate 3s and Fld6 is planned with the existing Morph 4 for AM.

Yes, I took a look at your rack—good-looking rack—very Synthesis Technology-ey! I like it! I was actually thinking the same: two Generate 3s + Morph 4 + FLD6. But that's a LOT of moolah! I may get an actual complex-oscillator someday: The coming Cosmotronix has really caught my eye because it seems to encompass every type of synthesis.

This is my usual patch, I don't know how it stacks up to what's going on behind the scenes on something like a DPO, but it's what I understand a Music Easel to be doing (hopefully I'm not making a tit of myself here!) Patch cable colors mean nothing except to make the patch easier to read.

Patching my way into complex vco territory with various configurations of the Livewire AFG + Dannysound En129 (thru zero) + uFold II + FM Aid. The Mangrove and A-110-4 get involved, as well.

Yeah, all the Livewire stuff looks like quality gear.

My current favorite is the Joranalogue Filter 8, Generate 3, and Fold 6 plus some envelopes and VCAs or LPGs. It's a fantastically unusual and diverse voice when set up like a complex oscillator. Generally just use the f8 as a modulation source for g3 and sometimes f6.
It's done!
...probably! Ahhh, who am I kidding...

Looked into the PDO recently. Sounds really darn good. WMD has a system comprising several modules that can be connected on the back end for normaled connections which seems really powerful.

One of my Mutable Instruments TIDES is almost permanently patched into my WARPS.
I tried three "proper" complex oscillators, but none gave me that flexibility.

I haven’t really caught on to what I can do with Morph 4. Can you give me an example of using it for AM with the two G3’s?

Serge NTO with Doepfer A-110-6, Xaoc Samara for mixing inverting etc, and Serge VCM for shaping. With a DUSG next to it 'swiss knife module', and a NCOM ... !
Powerful! (lots of HPs but i don't care about that)
WTB: XAOC: Samara II, Batumi + Poti, Sewastopol II
DIY kits (panel+pcb): Haible Tau phaser, NTO, DUSG, VCFQ

Intellijel Dixie II+, Rubicon II, Bifold, uMod II, and some VCA channels.

Morph 4 makes it easy to select/mix/crossfade among which carrier signal(s) you want. For even more convenience you could patch the 4 inputs to something like a mutes module. Subtle to extreme modulation on the morph input. Bypass onboard morph with a joystick to the 4 VCA levels etc.
