FYI: Updated DPO Manual

Post by shady smiles » Wed Feb 20, 2013 4:08 pm

Spied this on the MakeNoise FB page.

http://www.makenoisemusic.com/manuals/DPOManual.pdf

Includes some fixes and a new patch tip (Analog Bass Drum).

You'd think he'd be able to manage more than one patch idea...

Anyone have links to DPO demos in a more traditional minimoog style system? You know, filters, envelopes etc. Maybe a melody.

This one has melody, filters, envelopes:

No minimoog style system though. If I wanted that, I'd buy a Sub-Phatty
or Macbeth DO/BEF.

Sounds great, Entrainer! If I get the DPO, it would be in a more traditional system for quite a while. Just curious about the sound in that setting.

It does a huge range of sounds, some of which can be very rich and beautiful.
It has a very different sound but it's perfectly usable for melodic work.

The sound is so complex you can hook it up to a envelope generator and a VCA and you've got a pretty powerful synth.

Thanks! Well, I'd have to see the system in order to comment.

The thing about combining different designers' module is you do need
to consider the flavor or mix. Consider two engineers mixing a record...
one mixes the kick with a 10kHz boost, another cuts 10kHz and boosts
the hats instead.

Well, take one engineers boosted kick and another's boosted hats, now
you have a harsh mix.

Optomix is clean and I don't think it even opens up to 20kHz, so the
DPO (IMHO) compensates by having a ton of high-frequency harmonics
and distortion/waveshaping available.

Add the DPO to a dirty or nasally filter and it'd be way to much.

I don't consider the DPO to be an all-purpose oscillator. It's something to
be added to a makenoise system or placed in a larger system as an
additional voice in an orchestra.

Can anyone point me to the context/history of "259 style modulation routing" mentioned in the manual's intro?

Thanks!

It refers to the Buchla 259, the original "complex oscillator":

As you can see, there are a number of fairly direct parallels between this and the DPO (or the Verbos Complex Oscillator, Endorphin.es Furthurrrr Generator, etc.). The modulation routing in question is the voltage-controllable level of FM, AM, and/or timbre (wavefolding) modulation of the principal oscillator by the modulation oscillator seen in the center of the module.

leftbracket Thank you! I'll do some studying accordingly. DPO just arrived yesterday and initial results are off-the-charts... It seems like it will take more work to learn to tame it than to learn to pull weird stuff out of it, and I like that!

here's a generally good idea of the dpo i think.. i shouldn't have listened to this again just now.. james cigler's dpo patch from a modular podcast has the most satisfying tones i think i've ever heard. i just don't have space cash or interest for a dual osc. the sounds though... :drunkhomer: :drunkhomer: :drunkhomer:

Here's a bit I just made playing around with the Final output, and using sync mode with a Turing Machine on osc A. The "percussion" is the Strike input and the Angle being triggered by a clock divider. This is just DPO, one wave going through the Xaoc Phase Rotator, and some Reverb:

Heres the sound of my DPO. I can go through the patch should anyone care.

I love making the DPO go completely insane. It's very easy for the sounds to become incomprehensibly terrifying and disharmonic. It's beautiful.
If you ever come to a fork in the road, pick it up.

For sure, i will admit I like my DPO much better when its combined with either diode distortion or through Moddemix and LxD etc. Something about using Make Noise modules together really they are beutifully designed system.
