NEW DIY 909 DRUM MACHINE PROJECT

Post by steda » Sun Dec 29, 2019 10:32 am

Hello!
I want to present you my project.
This project was made to repair 909 drum machines with damaged boards or to build new one for those who love diy hobby projects.
After examining the availability of rare details, it was decided to make a few changes and options.

The first thing we changed - added the ability to use modern and affordable buttons that are easy to buy. At the same time we left the opportunity to use the original ones.

The second thing we changed - the addition of the ability to use modern 7 segment displays.

The third allows to use 27256 chips or originals roms.

The fourth allows to use modern potentiometers.

Fifth, the IDC connector on the sequencer board for the mc64 cartridge is changed.

Sixth, the power board has been changed which will allow the use of toroid power transformer.

All changes do not affect the sound and are made only to simplify the purchase of parts.
The work on the sequencer board is almost finished and soon we will ship it to the pcb factory.

I wonder if it would be possible or interesting to also have a standalone 909 sequencer box without any analog voicing. Just midi and trigger outputs.
Good luck with the project!

Cool!

Do you intend to design an enclosure and bits to build up a whole unit? Or will this be aimed more for repair/restoration of existing units (which tend to sell for like $3000 or more :D )?

I second that emotion. A standalone sequencer box with just midi, trigger, and accent outputs would be ideal to work with arbitrary drum modules.
Licenced to solder since 1993

You know, that line that goes: "i want things that go Whooa and diuungg", like that nice man said to Bob Moog. That´s what I want too.

Bought the Nava/Erica case but with the state of that project I know it’s not going to happen ...

Im very interested in the notion of using the sequencer with the mb9090 clones. I have a working mb9090 that doesnt get enough use from lack of a sequencer

If you need a good "drum machine without sounds", build yourself a MIDIBox.

I put 4 MIDI outs on mine, plus 8 triggers (you can have up to 64), as well as 8 voices of CV/Gate.

You'll have yourself a fabulous drum programmer using just one of the 16 tracks. It's very much like the TR-606 programmer in that you can write/edit/save patterns while the thing runs. Up to 256 steps in a track. Loads of "shuffle" options, even custom shuffle templates.

Then you can program more drums, basses, 303s, chord stabs, etc on the other tracks :-)
