I have a couple 6.3v 220uF electrolytics here, the BOM specifies 10v. Is it possible that I could substitute those without issue?

cheers!

The module is designed for 5V amplitude modular audio signal. I put 10V to have some headroom because electrolyths have less lifetime if used more than 80% nominal voltage.

Hi, is there a mouser cart for this project? kinda new to DIY, not comfortable diving into the sourcing rabbit hole right away :help:

I made Mouser shopping cart:

L-1 Stereo Compressor - Mouser shopping cart http://www.mouser.com/ProjectManager/Pr ... 4a34bf6189

MERCHANDISE TOTAL: $66.26 (USD)

Parts not included in Mouser shopping carts:

5 potentiometers (10K linear X 2, 50K linear X 3)
5 knobs
IC sockets - 20-pin X 2, 8-pin X 1.

Where to buy?

1. Thonk:
pots: http://www.thonk.co.uk/shop/alpha-9mm-pots/
knobs: http://www.thonk.co.uk/shop/synth-pointer-knobs/

2. Erthenvar:
pots: http://erthenvar.com/store/accessories/ ... tical-pots

3. Smallbear:
pots: http://smallbear-electronics.mybigcomme ... -pc-mount/
knobs: http://smallbear-electronics.mybigcomme ... -2-colors/

4. Tayda:
pots: 50K http://www.taydaelectronics.com/potenti ... b-9mm.html
10K http://www.taydaelectronics.com/potenti ... b-9mm.html

Jacks.

I included into Mouser shopping cart 8 Kobiconn jacks. But they need to solder a leg for ground connection.
Better choise is Inline jacks:

1. Thonk: http://www.thonk.co.uk/shop/thonkiconn- ... ckets-x50/

2. Erthenvar: http://erthenvar.com/store/accessories/ ... line-jacks

Sample made by Jim Sutherland www.jimsutherland.uk.com/

Distorted drums in punk style are heavy compressed. Jim modulated Makeup from Envelope Out to have extremally strong compression.

I have a calibration question. When calibrating the LED it says:

"Disconnect everything except of power. Set auto/var to auto. Trim 50K [LED] until LED light goes on, then slightly trim until light goes off"

What should the other pots like threshhold and ratio be set to?

Cheers,
Alex

Just built one as well and I'm not experienced with testing voltages on chips

Could someone help me with these two steps:
2. Distortion symmetry. 50K [distort].
Set Makeup gain to min. Measure DC voltage at 12 pin of THAT4301. It will be about -2mV. Set Makeup gain to max. Trim 50K [distort] to achieve equal voltage.
Make it for both channels.
3. 0 dB level on second channel. 22K [0dB level].
Feed mid-level mid-frequency sine wave to IN1. Measure the voltage at 4 pin of THAT4301 (IC1, right chip).
Feed the same signal to IN2. Trim 22K [0dB level] to achieve the same voltage at 4 pin of THAT4301 (IC4, left chip).
I have this multimeter.

I understand how to count the pins so 12 is second from the bottom
on the right of the that4301 chip, right?
If it's facing up like on the back of the board.

Turn the meter on smallest voltage - 2000mV there.
The voltage we measure will be about -2mV
Blach wire to ground. Red wire to 12th pin.

Can someone who has one of these please measure the voltage coming OUT of the Attack and Release CV INPUT jacks. I am getting basically rail to rail voltage coming out of both, which makes then unusable.

As I turn their respective pots I get the following voltage readings:

Attack: +11.xxx to -11.xxx from full CCW to full CW.
Release: -11.xxx to +11.xxx from full CCW to full CW.

The rest of my input jacks measure at or near 0v as expected, and function properly.

The module itself functions perfectly otherwise and I quite like it. Just can't CV the A&R.

I'd just like to know if anyone else is experiencing the same thing or if it was something isolated to myself such as build error or the pre-done SMD or board having a problem beforehand.

If someone could quickly take a measurement I'd appreciate it.

Thanks

This is a video how att rel cv work. First I show bypassed signal, then turn on compressor, then feed slow LFO in att cv input, then in rel cv input. You can see how attack then release changes. 5V covers about half range.
I made att rel cv input not buffered because had a choise to make so or not make at all. No place on the PCB for another chip. I know it is not very correct but I decided to make because it works.

Hi Alex,
Thanks for the video, however I'm not asking about the CV input range, because I can't get them to work at all.

As I was trying to explain in my private messages - I have voltage feeding OUT of the input jacks and interacting with anything I try to hook up to those two CV inputs.

I should not be measuring any voltage coming OUT of the attack and release input jacks, correct? But I am. The other inputs all measure 0v as expected.

I'm not sure how else to explain it.

Cheers

Since they're not buffered, maybe the answer here is that I have to explicitly set each pot to 0v to avoid feeding any voltage OUT of the jacks, then send in external CV accordingly?

Is that what you did in your video?

I'm really just trying to make sure that what I'm seeing is correct or not. And if it requires a bit of quirky usage - I totally understand. Just definitely not something I've come across before. ;)

Yes, offset voltage is presented there on inputs. But they work, I showed you.

Distressor is a mono compressor, so a pair is needed for stereo action. Pair worth $2700 with list price $3000. So it's 10 times more expensive than L-1 Microcompressor Stereo, or 20 times if to make it DIY.

www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/ELI8S

Then I persuaded him to compare them to L-1 Microcompressor Stereo and to record something. First we experimented with synth sounds but he choosen drum sample for record. This sample was already compressed much, so he removed peaks and made the sound's 'body' louder in his record.
Then I made the same using Microcompressor. I tried to make maximum possible identical sound parameters to have similar compression as in his record. To make this I used AUTO position att/rel switch, and PEAK position auto/peak switch. This mode makes very short attack, it removes peaks, sound's 'body' is possible to make loud as wanted using THRESHOLD knob. I tried to make this loudness equal to his record.
Often we need upside-down - to make attack of a sound sharper and cut 'body'. Manual att/rel mode of the Microcompressor can be used for this. I usually use peak/auto switch in PEAK position for drums and in AUTO for notes.
This is record. I didn't uploaded it on Soundcloud to save quality.
It's 24-bit 44.1 KHz.
Three parts divided with silence. First - initial sample, second - compressed with a pair od Distressors, third - compressed with the L-1 Microcompressor Stereo.

I should receive mine tomorow !!
unfortunately the soundfile comparing both devices is unavailable, but
though I bought mine mainly for creative sound exploration, I wonder if I could use it in a mastering
(and/or mixing) process, like an outside inserted device in a daw,
any experience of that with the L-1 ?

Can I substitute 1n4001s for the two 1n4004s? I screwed up my BOM order

Yep. The 1N4004 is a 400V part. The 1N4001 is a 50V part. Both are good for 12V Eurorack.

Thanks! I did some research last night and came to the same conclusion. 1N4001s installed and the unit is working fine so far.

hi there, i just received mine and unfortunately one of the outputs (or inputs, not sure) is way more hotter (around 5-7db) bassier und a bit distorted (which i dont mind since this is what i got it for in the first place :bang: but i really do need the stereo functionality, could anyone help me maybe fix this?? :help: thanks!!

Will be new Discrete Stereo Microcompressor. Prototype is ready, works perfect.

But no kits.
