[DEMOS ADDED!] Mutant Hihats eurorack DIY PCB/panel sets

Howdy folks!

So here's the sister thread for the Hihats! I posted the Bassdrum thread here earlier today: viewtopic.php?t=111384

This and the other thread will serve as interest check and tech support/build threads for these projects!

This is the Mutant Hihats module. It is an evolution of the infamous 808 circuit. But it's been redesigned from the ground up to be a powerful creative tool in the modular world!

I'll have eurorack panel and PCB sets for sale as well as I'll be stocking those pesky vactrols and long pin headers to bundle with PCB sets if you like. So, all you'll have to find are the easy parts (which there will be a BoM for of course!)

I will have audio and video demos like crazy over the next few weeks. Just waiting for the last prototypes to arrive at my door so I can record them!

Primary Features

While the internal noise generator is based on the metallic noise generator in the 808, you can plug virtually ANY sound source into the EXT input and make all sorts of cool hihats/percussive sounds!

- analogue hihat circuitry capable of synthesising vanilla TR-808 open and closed hihat sounds (simultaneously)
- external audio input lets you synthesise hihats from virtually any sound source (Jupiter Storm, vcNOIZ, etc.)
- lo-fidelity original VCAs replaced by OTA-based modern VCAs
- VCA DRIVE control for each hihat allows you to dial in anything from soft metallic hihats to extremely overdriven, crunchy hihats
- Exclusive switch lets you select how the two hihats (open/closed) interact with eachother when triggered at the same time
- cutoff frequency control for internal resonant bandpass filter
- resonant filter can be switched on/off
- modular level mutual accent input (0-5V CV)
- trigger input accepts almost anything as a trigger signal
- non-invasive analogue optocouplers used for voltage control, thus, completely vintage sounds can still be had if that's what you're after!
- completely redesigned, hi-fi signal chain spares no expense by replacing cheap transistor amplifiers with low noise opamp and OTA equivalents
- you can dial in super hot, modular level output levels (up to 20Vp-p!)

It's not that easy unfortunately. In the interest of keeping costs/part count down (there are a lot of parts already in this design!) I had to abstain from that feature. I think the features and enhancements we did add are more interesting than just making a VCF in the signal path

But you can always use an external noise source through a filter if you want to control the cutoff into the hihats.

Right on

The board is designed with Silonex NSL32-SR3 but you could also use VTL5C3. Make sure to use SR3 suffix as they are fast and the non SR3 are not fast enough response time!

I chose to use Silonex ones because they are not obsolete and are cheaper than VTL5CX

Out of curiosity, do you plan on making your own euro panel or are you going to wire it all yourself? Just so it's clear: there are no provisions made on this design for universal format considerations. You'll have to wire to the control board manually and I won't have a wiring guide made for it!

Not that it's impossible to do...just so you know, is all

Sorry! There won't be any full kits. Too much parts spread in these designs to sort and package common parts like resistors and capacitors. To pay for my time doing that would make them cost as almost as much as the retail eurorack modules which would suck!
