First time SMT builder. It's actually not as hard as I thought it would be. Minor hiccups along the way, but all in all, very fun build.

Built these 3, perfectly working and fully calibrated! Now on to the next 17...

Just finished building and flashing peaks, got a real stlink v2 and olimex jtag adapter this time. No more messing with ftdi , or jumper wires from the eBay stlink.

Hi I'm about to build my first one.. (RIPPLES) and I have a doubt about D5 and D6 diode polarity..

there is a triangle with a line on the top on the pcb.. so line on pcb (the top of the triangle) and line on the component must be align ?

Thanks :)

Clem

The point of the triangle points towards the cathode side of the diode where the line is.

Magpie panels currently sold out, so I felt compelled to whip something up.

Laptop

Post by GregorSmith » Sun Sep 16, 2018 5:41 pm

Hi guys, hopefully you can help me. I built some mutable pcb’s but after buying an authentic stlink V2 and usbtinyisp my darn 10 y/o laptop isn’t doing the job of uploading the firmware. I’m getting usb errors on both as vagrant and avr dude won’t recognize either devices. My question is what laptop works great for both as I’m due for a new one anyways. Please any help on picking a pain free compatible laptop(windows) would be incredibly helpful. Thanks!

You should post this over in the unsuccessful build thread. This thread is strictly for bragging.

Ok, I figured post it here where people had success and could point me in the right direction.

Do you build them exclusively for your own use or do you sell as well? Have no experience whatsoever in building modules. They look awesome in black.

Finally got this puppy built, way easier than I had expected!!

Ripples:

Here's another shot of it with the Mutable module tester:

Image

I blew the ATMEGA chip on the module tester by connecting a module's power cable backwards... oops :deadbanana: but it still powers modules fine, just waiting for more ATMEGA chips to be delivered so I can get it back up and running. I'd still call it a successful build!

Going to try to make a couple Branches today. I've got Peaks and Braids to tackle after that, with some Elements PCBs on the way! OH BOY.

Sorry for the delay in replying - only just seen your post. Only for my own use. I wouldn’t sell MI stuff.... (In fact I’ve never sold a module yet!! Just build another case :-) )
Thanks for the comments.... (the panels are really nice in the flesh - from China for ~£3 each...)

I built two as I want to use one stock and use the other to play with some ideas for new algorithms. But having used them I can’t bear to take both out of my rack - it’s so nice having two to cross-modulate, etc - so I’ll probably build a third one ! (I’ve still got a couple of pcbs and panels spare)

Had a few hiccups along the way, but now I've got Branches to add to the family:

Im planning of building another ripples (second SMT build) but have 1 resistor short. It's a 1K resistor which according to the BOM should be 100mW 1%. Now i have 1K resistors 1% but they have 63mW loss instead of 100mW. Does anybody know if this would bring up problems?

R14, R17, R19, R21, R23, R32, R41, R46. Any of those, i got 7 resistors which have 100mW loss, and 1 with 63mW, if its not possible i just order the correct ones because dont want to built a faulty module...

Soldering of the pots for this one required much more attention than for uBurst an uO_C

DO you have a picture of the uBurst? Also, was it challenging to solder those crystals in place?

I'm building a uBurst right now.. I had a few parts fuck ups in the kit I bought so I'm waiting for them to be corrected... I'm hoping to post my work here first but you never know, I might be posting on the unsuccessful builds thread first..

The patch you've created in your brain is more challenging to modify than the patch you have on your modular.

Banged out a few more modules recently... This really is an addiction.

Started out with Peaks:

Then I moved onto Braids:

Then I whipped a second Braids up with gnarly red LEDs:

Image

All in all I have 1 Ripples, 2 Branches, 2 Peaks, and 2 Braids in my current setup:

Image

Gonna grab some spare parts and finish up my other Ripples I have laying around. Then its on to Grids, Elements... and I've told myself I'm going to relax after those.......

....But that's not going to happen :sb:
