3 panel black Serge run-Accepting Paypal

Post by tojpeters » Wed Aug 19, 2015 11:08 am

Ok gang I think I've come up with a final design.
There are still some details to work out,but this should be close.
I will flesh this post out later.
Panel #1- Quicksand panel
This panel is meant to give the user a complete synth by itself ,just add a controller (keyboard, sequencer).

Image

3x CGS48 VCO.
No real mods, but a couple wiring changes. Instead of AC and DC jacks for the saw,saw to sine and FM there is a switch for each to choose AC or DC.The processor input has a switch to bypass the processor and provide another 1v/oct in. The third VCO has the sub-oscillator section brought out to the panel. Under that is a CGSRRPC ring modulator.
Next is a CGS97 Serge noise source. This is made with the track cut as mentioned in the instructions with a seperate input and attenuator for the S&H,an AC/DC switch for the output and a manual trigger button.
Next is a CGS112 VCFQ with a switch for low frequency mode and a switch to link the frequency control to resonance.
Next is a CGS 04 DC Mixer. Works well for audio also.
Then there is a CGS114 DUSG. The top half has a DC out and a second out that can be switched from AC to BiPolar. There is a cycle switch, which I can show you how to wire so the LED changes from green to red to indicate cycle mode (not required). There is a knob to introduce a variable exponential mode. This goes through a CGS04 dc mixer board to isolate it from any signal into the VC in jack. This mod works great.
The bottom is similar, but with a CGS96 comparator wired into the second output jack to give a nice variable clock source.
Lastly a CGS101 DCSM with a couple CGS64 VCA boards to add VC pan depth. And CGS91 rails if you are so inclined-I recommend them.
Add list of buyers here

The second is the Black Swamp
This is based on the SWAMP panel (permission granted) with some updates and labeling changes plus a few new features like touch pads and a Solo mode wherein you can play row D as a touch keyboard while rows A-C continue sequencing. Some boat trimming will be required.

Image

First is a CGS36 pulse divider/logic. The pulse divider has a reset button and a 'syncopate' switch that forces it to reset at /7,causing the lower divisions to take on a funky syncopated feel.
In between the 2 half's of that module is CGS31 digital noise.
It has both random gates on the panel (with LEDs) and the internal clock is available at the clock I/O jack when not using an external clock. There is a low speed mod for this as well that involves leaving out 1 resistor. LEDs for all the divisions.
Next up is one of my favorites, CGS13 Gated Comparator.
This has a few wiring and label changes as compared to the SWAMP. The loop enable switch is wired so it cuts off the input while in loop mode. The former loop enable jack is now labeled loop disable,a gate here will end the loop. There is a load button that adds bits to the loop manually. The loop in jack next to it adds bits when sent a gate. There is a rotary switch to choose the number of steps in your loop, one position goes to another loop in jack useful for cascading another gated comp into it. The sequencer knobs are all push-pull,pulling the knob disables the bits,1-8.
Now the sequencer. CGS87 8 step plus a single CGS59A board,CGS 28 SEQUENTIAL SWITCH, CGS86 8 PAD SERGE TOUCH RESPONSIVE KEYBOARD, 2x CGS39 QUAD LOGIC GATE,YuSynth RANDOM GATES, and a board from me for the solo function.
Row A are push-pull pots for scaling the output voltage. The switch position of this knob affects the entire column. Each column has a 3 position gate switch with gate 1 that lasts for the duration of the clock pulse,a center no gate position, and gate 2 which starts when the clock pulse goes low. With PWM you can adjust just how long each gate lasts and when gate 2 starts. Each column has 2 switches that can be wired as run/hold/skip or run/stop/skip for each direction hold makes that stage stay on until a new stage is select, stop makes the stage not play and the sequence stops.
Each column has a touch pad. There is a solo switch that allows row D to be played as a keyboard while rows A-C sequence normally. Vertical sequencing (A-B-C-D) can be set to reset after row b,c,or d. You would want to reset it after B or C when using Solo mode. There is a reset button for the vertical sequencer. There is also a random sequence feature. And a stop jack,a gate here will stop the sequence at the ghost stage. I recommend CGS91 rails and maybe 2 of the CGS94 pot mounting rails.

The third is the Okefenokee - an interface and just a bit more stuff panel.

Image

Hexinverter MIDI2CV PCB,CGS06 Burst generator with variable pulse width, (CGS) LPG with a feedback/ring amount switch, CGS81 Dual voltage processor,CGS90 serge phaser,CGS95 Reverb & CGS64 VCA( for VC feedback),CGS113 Serge wave multipliers,CGS57 Bi-N-Tic filter with 4 switches to change capacitor values,CGS92 Smooth/stepped gen,CGS76 1973 envelope gen. I recommend a set of CGS91 rails and CGS120 utility rails.

I will offer support for builders and wiring diagrams when things are changed from the CGS drawings.
I will start making a list. If you are incorrectly included or excluded please PM me. I will float this for at least a couple more weeks to allow stragglers to join in, then I'll give a week for payments before a cut-off date. The price is not firm yet,if 25 people signed up for a panel it would be cheaper. But in general $100 shipped CONTUS. Overseas shipping at cost.
I'm always happy to answer questions.

I have a black panel prototype coming to me in the mail, and was planning to make an announcement when it arrived
Guess there are going to be a lot of options for folks.

Throw your design up here if you want, this can be a general black Serge thread.

Always wanted to copy the CalArts black Serge, but not sure I'll ever actually get around to it. That being said, I'm definitely interested in any black Serge panels that are produced.

I will when the panel gets here. I've found the blackface panels to be a little tricky to design. With inverse printing (black background, silver graphics) the artwork tends to get overpowered by the black background. I recommend increasing the stroke a bit, and if you have time, ordering samples first. That'd what I did, and it's the main reason I've had a delay in announcing anything.

This is the inpsiration for the panel series I'm announcing in a few days. 100% Serge :tu:

You can put me down for 1 of the "basic" Serge panels.

I love this! Here's an idea for one I was working on (purely for fun), I think it's mostly CGS. I was wondering if you could cram most of the functionality of an Arp 2600 into a Serge panel. I'm not sure the Random in this would do the trick. It looks better in black. I was thinking this and a TKB would be fun.

I was just grabbing pictures of various Serge I could find and trying to match things up... all laid out in Inkscape. If you have nay interest in Jon, I could give you the SVG files.

Very nice. There are some artwork changes coming to bring this in line with another black panel run that is still in the works.

I already expressed the one thing that would be cool to change (replacing the Envelope on the processing unit with a filter). With that being said, if I were to ever get these, I would likely have to commission them, and likely from you.
They are awesome though, and even though I now have a SWAMP, it is good to see it is making a comeback.

The Bi-N-Tic is a VCF. I've heard nothing but good things about the Envelope Generator and am excited to finally build one.

This is super cool Jon, I'm glad to see it finally being tackled.

Big ups to Darrel Johansen for designing the first one (and gifting it to CalArts). The silver-on-black is stunningly beautiful.

So as a currently-not-a-Serge-user... would one source all the pcbs from Ken Stone etc. Like... the modules that make up the panels are standard layout/format, right? No special black-magic (see what I did there?) alternatives/variations?

I'm trying to get a bunch of MFOS out of my backlog and into my synth. boards all populated, Euro panels made... but motivation to start wiring = minus eleventy billion thousand

Mostly CGS,midi2cv is HEXINVERTER,random function for the sequencer is YuSynth. The boards for the solo mode are from me. I am still building the prototype and hopefully it won't need too much revision.
Lots of wiring. I will provide wiring diagrams. I will also offer commissioned builds.

The '73 envelope gen is fantastic, although I have to say I had one for at least a year before I really started to figure out what made it unique.
