D.I.Y. Korg Polysix panorama mod

Post by Pete66 » Mon Jun 04, 2018 3:32 pm

Hi folks,

Please let me start a new thread in order to not confuse with a similar topic, panorama mod for the legendary Sequential Circuits Prophet 600, which is been discussed at another place in this forum.

Last weekend I successfully applied a panorama mod to the Korg Polysix. This mod allows to freely spread all six voices in the stereo panorama.
For this I took the Prophet 600 panorama mod kit from "Das Musikding" and assembled it with some slight modifications. The PCB however remains to be unchanged.
The voice signals are tapped before the effect section means the manual VCA vontrol and the output volume control have no effect and the stereo output signal level is fix.
The original (mono) output signal remains to be unaffected and can be accessed in parallel to the (raw) stereo signal. This allows to mix both signals srereo+mono in a mixer. I like the new sound possibilities very much as you now can mix for instance a typical "muddy" Polysix mono sound with a let's say esemble effect with a clear and crisp stereo sound resulting in much more room and clarity, and life.

Early pic here, meanwhile I did do some small optimizations.

Documentation and sound examples are planned, please stay tuned. :hyper:

Kind regards,
Pete66

Polysix Panorama upgrade

Post by Pete66 » Tue Jun 26, 2018 2:55 pm

Hi Polysix enthusiasts,

Done deal: the mod works very well and in the meantime I have created a full documentation which is accessible here:

https://www.musikding.de/Polysix-Pan-Mod_1

To make it easy for you,
Klaus Brunner's online shop "Das Musikding" offers a complete kit at a very reasonable price - only 33,50 € - which can be ordered NOW.

Sound examples will be next.

Kind regards,
Pete66

Korg Polysix panorama mod sound example

Post by Pete66 » Sun Jul 01, 2018 11:54 pm

Hi folks,

Please find a Polysix panorama mod sound example:

Stereo out and mono out connected to a Mackie analog mixer.
No external effects used, all is pure Polysix sound "as is", directly recorded to audacity.
No multi tracking or such. Example starts with pure stereo. After the first break, mono (with Polysix effect) added.

Kind regards,
Pete66

Hey Pete66 fantastic job! Thank you for sharing! :tu: :tu: :tu:

This is a mod I was kind of dreaming of since i've tried a friend's OBx!

it might sound very fat with the unison mode activated and the small mod i did to detune all the voices on the polysix.

Hi kluber,

Thank you very much,
I'm happy you like the pan mod!

Would be nice to get more details about your detune mod, this sounds quite interesting.

Nice weekend!

Sure I will let you know. I've not yet ordered it but might do it soon.

About the detune mod, I think I've bumped into it on a very old yahoo group a long time ago.

But it's really simple and it's not rocket science! You need to replace one resistor with a pot which will set the range of the detune of all voices when the polysix is in unison mode.

Resistor R116 on KLM-366 PCB nearby IC31 must be removed and replaced with a 5k pot or 10k I think. and that's it.

Now with the detune mode and the addition of your clever circuit, imagine how the unison mode should sound = FAT!

Hi kluber,

Thanks for the hint re detune, I like simple mods with great effect.

For your convenience, I uploaded an example for Unison with panorama modded Polysix.
It is an A-B comparison, first mono, then stereo. Detune mod of course not yet applied.

Enjoy.

That looks cool! I believe I have some troubleshooting to do again on my Polysix. After that, this mod could be a consideration.

Nice idea!

Hi YashN,

Thank you for the positive feedback!
Wish you all the best with your Polysix, trust you'll get issues fixed smoothly.
Once fixed, I'm sure you will have lots of fun with the panorama mod.

Cheers,

Hi, I have installed this to my Polysix and it works great, but now I'm wondering if this would also work on Poly61?
