[IC] Eurorack blank selection packs

Post by julian » Mon Jun 18, 2018 6:44 am

People sometimes ask me about euro blanks, but my take on it is that theyre so cheap from the usual places, that what's the point in me making them?

...but people keep asking all the same?

Im wondering about doing undrilled selection packs. Undrilled to keep the cost down, and, as these will be primarily purchased (i suspect) by DIY builder, who, i assume, will be drilling them anyway, there seems little point in drilling adding to the cost?

I guess i would do silver and black packs to start with - something like

1x2hp
2x4hp
3x8hp
2x10hp
1x12hp
1x42hp

(but im very open to guidance on the selection!)

Again these would be precision cut, but have no corner holes. They would just be 2mm anodised aluminium parts for DIY builders to make into their own modules.

What do you think? Would that be any good for you?

Having the corner holes would be worthwhile, those are always the same.
The blindpanels one can buy sometimes have the captive screws and plastic parts, which are not needed, also they sometimes have the little grips.

I'm interested! +1 for the corner holes.

I don't have figures, as I've not worked it out, but I suspect it won't be viable with the corner holes.

Adding those 2 or 4 holes is another process, and I dont think I will be able to better the prices of the big firms that knock these out in the thousands.

Sure I know people would like them, but these would be aimed at DIY builders. If you say you have to have holes, then there are other options.

I buy a fair number of blank panels, and the holes are essential (in my opinion of course). It's fairly difficult to drill slotted holes at home.

Nice to see you offering larger panels too, those can be hard to get. One thing I have asked from other panel people is odd sizes, like 3hp or 5hp. I've been cutting my own with a Dremel and cutoff disk mounted in a small workbench similar to a Workmate, but it's time-consuming and fairly easy to lose bits of finger.

How come you're trying to cut slotted mounting holes?

Because I find them to be more useful than "normal" holes. My cases are DIY, and not everything always lines up nicely. Slotted holes allow me to be a bit less perfect but still have a case free of small gaps between modules.

I would be interested definitely. I'm not scared of drilling holes. Black or anodised, I'm not fussy.

Hi Julian, whilst I can get 2 4 and 8hp Doepfer blanks from thomann, 6hp is often not available...plus the postage and credit card charges only make this viable when combined with a more significant purchase. I might buy a 5 pack each of 4 , 6, 8. But less keen on assortment packs of all sizes. Where panel template fpd files are available, they tend not to include the slotted fixing holes, so having them pre drilled is a bonus.

I've also wondered if newbie diyers would be interested in small runs of pre drilled common patterns...eg 4hp panel with three pot holes aligned centre and 4 jack holes below. I had the thought when looking at the "backing panels" Soundtronics offer for MFOS modules but they probably didn't have a polished finish as they get covered up. Just a thought the additional margin plus reduced set up compared to custom might just be viable. I'm sure a survey of other folks commonly needed hole patterns would narrow it down.
