Where to find RGB button

Post by obust » Tue Mar 10, 2020 12:31 pm

Hi all,

I am new to DIY and would like to build a eurorack sequencer.
For the design I have in mind I would need RGB button likes the ones used by Intellijel (e.g. on the Quadrax but I am struggling to find any.
Does anyone know what these are called and where to find them ?

On a more general note, where is a good place to look for classic eurorack parts:
- (LED) sliders
- knobs
- encoders
- (rgb[a]) LEDs

Thanks for the help

nice rgb buttons are kind of hard to do in my experience. would also love to know which part intellijel uses here or if its a custom ws2812 build.
edit: intellijel employee on their forum says they're custom made.

what you wanna search for is "rgb illuminated pushbutton" or "~ tactile switch"
https://www2.mouser.com/Electromechanic ... weZ1y876pr

for a sequencer you could also look into the adafruit trellis thing:
https://learn.adafruit.com/adafruit-neo ... d_products
those use the WS2812 rgbn leds which aree also your choice for the RGB leds you look for, easily adressable via any MCU.
those also exist in classic 5mm led shape.

i am pretty sure we'll see some more ws2812 based smaller buttons soon,it's suchh an obvious market. if anybody on here feels like designing a chainable 1-led version of the adafruit PCB, i'd buy a ton! it's super simple, and you can get anyshape of elastomer silicone rubebr pad thing quite cheap or print it onyour friends 3d printer.

for general euroack slilders, pots, jacks, def go to www.thonk.co.uk to get an overview of the most popular parts.

rotary encoders, for the afforddable 24-30 ppi ones most people use bourns PEC11 series but the slightly more expensive ALPS equivalent feels much nicer, more like a classic pot. higher resolution encoders get really expensive.
also look into endless analog potentiometers as an alternative to rotary encoders. i just learned that thats what NI uses on their Kontrol/Maschine hardware.

Is it this one?

Highly PB615303HL-7

same as the ones on the 4ms SWN?

Intellijel employee on their forum says they're custom made.
Good for them and too bad for me :(
what you wanna search for is "rgb illuminated pushbutton" or "~ tactile switch"

I went through the pages and nothing seems to fit the bill...
a chainable 1-led version of the adafruit PCB
Although probably too big for the eurorack market, that would already be a good alternative
Highly PB615303HL-7
Do you have a link ? Google doesn't recognize it. The 4ms kind of led button would work for me as well !

I usually look for clear buttons or knobs. then I look at surface mounted LED's. you can mount the LED's on the other side of the PCB with a drill hole for light. there are surface mount packages that shine down instead of up. sometimes you can stack SMD parts vertically on the same side of the PCB. the height of an LED can be < 1mm. if your knob has a cavity under it then you put it there.

I'm stuck on this also..driving me crazy trying to source a part to finalise a design.

Ideally want a small (say6x6mm) tact switch paired with an addressable rgb led (WS2812 ideal).

Current plan is to do what EATyourGUITAR says -surface mount a WS2812 close to a clear cap but finding it difficult to source a switch / clear cap combo that matches the gap between front panel and pcb with thonk pots.

If I can't source the parts alternative is to go for “Make Noise” style indicators (good tutorial here from threetom).

If anyone else has been here and got an good solution would be great to hear, cheers, Paul

I'm also looking for RBG buttons for a synth I'm making. I really like the size and look of the buttons on MakeNoise Tempi. The have a nice flat face to I can pad print an icon on top. (As I 3D model my synth I find myself caring a lot about space on the front panel. Having an indicator light, icon, and button all live in the same space instead of next to each other saves a lot of space)

It looks like Tempi and Instruo Harmonaig use the exact same RGB buttons, which could indicate that they are available off the shelf. Does anyone have any clues?

Those look like Highly KS01-BLV and/or C&K D6R. Not sure if these exist in RGB but R+G is definitely possible.

I have played around (extensively) with designing a suitable RGB button and it's not an easy task!
I think the best thing I came up with was button caps on a frame with other button caps (3-D printed) that lever over the switch (a 6x6mm) with the cap over a 3mm 2812 LED. There was of course light transmission to adjacent buttons so 3D printing a black frame to separate buttons close together would be a next step.

3-D printing transparent is kind of ugly so I'm going to have a go at it with a resin printer once I get one, clear plastic yay!

With that it might be possible to light-pipe an LED into the cap

Been trying 3d print for button caps also, works but not great quality.

Current direction of travel is MEC 5E tacts with transparent caps and a WS2812s next to them (and a 3d print light shield to stop it bleeding to the next button). The MEC 5Es are expensive for tact switches but look decent.

I've tried the 5050 WS2812s and the tiny 2020 version. The 2020s are nice but not great for this application.

That looks great! Why not just 3D print collars to fit on those caps that what pick up the light?

This is the completed version using the MEC 5E tact switches with translucent cap, WS2184s and a 3d print light shield.
