Stochastic Marvels in 5U (THT based on "Marbles")

Post by EOTS » Sun Apr 05, 2020 10:56 am

Hey folks!

Following my "Plaits" port ( viewtopic.php?f=17&t=216177 )
I have been busy working on my next module "Stochastic Marvels".

It's based on the Eurorack module "Marbles" originally developed by "Mutable Instruments",
but has a lot of added features
- streamlined UI with textual clues whenever possible
- all "hidden" states have been made explicit (where while holding a pushbutton modifier, some potentiometers would get different meaning)
- improved quantizer with easily programmable scales
- 12-note keyboard for scale preview/programming
- OLED display, among other things f. ex. showing scale names and helping to edit and save personal scales

Below is a teaser of the first prototype (front panel is also just a mockup, will look more like Plaits):

I will post all news and updates in this thread!

There will also be DIY kits available, and prebuilt as well.

Stay tuned,
Martin

It looks great!!!
The added features are very sensible and make it seem like its own module rather than a 5u panel in front of a Eurorack pcb.

Thank you!

I've redesigned the PCBs completely from scratch, only parts of the schematics are taken from "Marbles".
All done in a zero fly-wires style.

I plan at some point to also do a spinoff own-module quantizer.

However, in the context of Marbles this has a special impact.
The module generates voltages in the X section, which in most cases would be used as 1V/Oct.
Think of it as random melodies with a scalable degree of randomness versus determinism.
But In the original module there are only 6 scales present, and programming custom scales is not straight-forward.
Therefore to harness this power with arbitrary scales and many preset scales is something I very much like to have myself :sb:

I like the extra labelling of the functions of the main knobs. This is helpful as I tend to forget the actual function when using my right brain to acquire the "muse". It's a real help to not have to have a fourteen page manual laying around to reference when the work is in flux.

I thought exactly the same.

It took me almost a day to read the complete manual and to understand the whole feature set.
So like with my Plaits port, I replaced the somewhat cryptic icons with text and got rid of all the hidden states, where a pushbutton acts like a modifier (ALT, CTRL, SHIFT, ...) and made those directly accessible

This looks great and I would love to built one.

I think the keyboard is a great addition, also getting rid of hidden menu functions.

Will the DIY kits PCB/panel bundles?

:yay:

Yes, multiple PCBs, a presoldered custom MCU daughterboard and the MU panel with the same look as the „Macro Oscillator“

Will the source code be available?

I just took a look at your Macro Oscillator and the combination of with the daughterboard sounds great.

Another quick question: On Marbles it is possible to program a weighted scale with the weight influencing the behaviour of the STEPS knob thinning out the scale - will this also be possible with the mini keyboard you implemented, or does it work in the common quantizer mode of turning notes on and off and show the set of scale notes?

Yes this will be supported of course.
Mini Keyboard will show the active notes in the scale, and effect both STEPS and standalone quantizer.
The weight that affect STEPS will be configured via the OLED and encoder, perhaps using the keyboard as a level/quantity meter.

Awesome folks!

Have been working hard on the module the last weeks, a lot of firmware was been rewritten from scratch.
Quantizer feature is not yet implemented, just a bit of display rendering code.

More relaxed one playing with it in a more subtle way:

wow, not finished or even started the macro oscillator yet (got sidetracked withthe covid business) but this also looks really cool will there be a motm panel design or just MU? thanks

I've been wanting a 5u port of this! Sign me up for a kit!

Thanks!

I'm not 100% sure about MOTM yet, but I think I'll do it.
But first the MU version will be completed…
