baby's first build

Post by vqlk » Sat Jun 06, 2020 12:02 pm

any idea what i could make? i am nuts clumsy, but fairly thorough when i am explicitly working on something...

i'd be especially interested in cv stuff really... though i'd like to make something by TouellSkouran modules -- eventually.

EDIT i have no space left in my rack, so any module should be USEFUL and small... also interested in pedals / external items

Not entirely sure what the question is. Are you asking for suggestions of easy DIY modules? There are loads of through-hole kits that are pretty darn easy as long as you know the basics of soldering. Might be a bit easier to make suggestions if you were a bit more specific in what you were looking to build and what parameters you would find useful.

Hey,
I am happy with the rack as it is, so I have nothing specific in mind -- beyond, ideally, something for modulating or creating cv, rather than sound. But yes, easy builds -- preferably cheap too. I don't know anything about this yet

Befaco makes a nice MIDI to CV module. Their kits are very “hand-holding,” a great way to dip your toes into DIY. They also offer a service where they will fix your module for a fee if you totally botch it. That is actually the module I use for MIDI-CV conversion, I really like it. It’s all through-hole which is pretty straight forward as long as you know how to use a soldering iron halfway decently.

If you’d like to build soldering confidence before tackling a more expensive kit like the Befaco MIDI-CV, passive multIples make for super easy first steps. You can even build “0HP” mults that won’t take up space in your rack.

the befcao modules look far, far too difficult for a first attempt...

i was looking at the MTM simple EQ, but what before that? perhaps a passive mult box, then that?

First would be a passive multiple. A number of manufactures have kits. It's really just soldering jacks to a pcb. AI makes one, he does a good job of explaining the process to you. He basically developed his kits to be teaching experiences to newbies at diy.

I have that new TouellSkouran kit on the way from thonk. I can post pictures and kit review. they do workshops to teach noobs. I don't think there will be any problems at all with the documentation.

The AI001 and AI002 Mixer (3 channel mixer) were my first two builds and they were super easy with great instructions. I wouldn't hesitate to get/recommend anything Abe/AI makes based on those two. I have other goals right now, but when I have some free money I plan on building a few more of Abe's modules, especially the matrix mixer and the vca mixer.

That being said, the Music Thing Modular Radio Music/Chord Organ is a pretty straightforward build as well, and there are a few alternative firmwares for it which you may find interesting.

I have also built the chord organ, actually three of them (see my "build 3, sell 2" scheme to fund DIY on my site). I think there are a few kludgy part modifications if I remember correctly (apologies if not), but all three worked the first time. It's a very cool module and a great way to introduce simple sampling to a system.

There is a fix for distortion over time by putting a 100k resistor between two points of the pcb, depending on the version of the build (for anyone considering building one)
