MIDI - CV options?

Post by snaper » Sat Jun 20, 2020 10:14 am

Hi Guys,

Just looking for a MIDI - CV converter, pref. DIY.
Requirements :

- PCB + chip option
- platform independent (not designed for EURO or such)
- at least 4-6 CV and Gate outs
- outputs should be configurable (like CV is not Note data only, but could be velocity or such)
- pref. USB MIDI, but regular one is also OK
- dedicated clock out
- PCB size should be small, like under 80 x 60 mm

What are the options, is this, or something really similar exist?

This isn’t DIY, but it’s not too expensive and it is platform agnostic. https://www.perfectcircuit.com/kenton-p ... NAQAvD_BwE
Disappointment with any module is usually a failure of imagination.

Ummm, I guess you would call it techno.

any microcontroller (teensy, esp, duino, axoloti) paired with a MAX11300 chip (25$ on the basic dev board), will give you a total of 20x CV/gate in or out, configurable on the fly from 0-10V or -5 to 5v.
12bit resolution of this codec gives a theoretical resolution of iirc 3 cent per bit if you want to do V/Oct.

mentioning this non-diy because of the low price and it being pretty new:
https://schneidersladen.de/en/flame-u16 ... i-cc-to-cv
i use this w/o the frontplate outside of eurorack.

i have no personal experience with the kenton stuff, and whhile i am sure thhe build quality and reliability is up there, it always seemed like a really steep price for the features you get.

Interesting options, but Id like to integrate it into the system for sure as a module....

There's some alternative firmware for the Ornament + Crime that has MIDI to CV (and CV to MIDI, and I believe it is configurable in many ways). The Firmware is called Hemisphere Suite, and the 'app' is Captain MIDI. I only learnt about it a few days ago and haven't used it, so can't comment on how good it is, but the Ornament + Crime module is good in itself, and people have made 5u/4u versions etc

well you can integrate my proposed teensy+max11300 solution into any formfactor you like... i once made an eurorack module of an axoloti and max11300 with 20 CV/gate 3.5mm jacks on the frontplate.

RPOCC and Hexinverter made a MIDI2Cv modules that many here have built.

Non-DIY go with the CV-OCD for value.

@weasel79: Got any code to go with that hardware suggestion?

Thanks for the heads-up, I wasn't aware of that firmware. After seeing the Befaco VCMC (reviewed in the June Sound On Sound, available free to read online!) I was having a look around for DIY CV-to-MIDI (or at least more DIY than assembling a £200+ kit, albeit not by much perhaps; the VCMC code is on GitHub too) and this looks like just the thing. Certainly worth putting together another o_C for.

I have a pair of Eurorack Modular Solos from Kenton. Not cheap, but full of useful features you won't find anywhere else and professional studio quality. Recommended.
