3.5mm TRS to DinSync wiring?

Post by jpeterman » Wed Jun 24, 2020 3:41 pm

I'm trying to make a TRS to DinSync (Sync24) cable and I can't find anything about the correct wiring for such a cable. I know that DinSync uses pins 1,2, and 3, but its not clear which pins Tip and Ring should be wired too (Sleeve seems to be pin 2).

Pin 1 is Strat/Stop , Pin 2 is ground, Pin 3 is clock. I don't think there is any standard for dinsync on TRS so you could try pin 1 and 3 on tip/ring and pin 2 to sleeve and switch 1 and 3 if it doesn't work. You can break it out to two TS cables and and run pin 1 to the tip of one and pin 3 to the the tip of the of the other and pin 2 to sleeve on both and then one cable would be clock and one start/stop.

DIN Sync uses three signals with an optional fourth. If you wire it on to a TRS plug you will only be able to start/stop and not be able to continue from a pause. It is more usual to bring out the signals to individual 3.5mm TS plugs.

The keystep (which is what I plan on using for converting MIDI to DinSync) only has a single (3.5mm) input for Sync OUT, so I don't understand how that would be the case.

It is not a full implementation, you won't be able to Continue. I expect that receiving MIDI Continue may do a hard Start or it may do nothing and you certainly won't be able to send it.
