Deep Well Hand Sockets

Post by groffcole » Fri Jul 24, 2020 3:58 pm

I want to get some deep well hand sockets like described here:
http://llamamusic.com/super-jx/steel_de ... edles.html

For eurorack modules, I'd like to use these for tightening the nuts for pots, jacks, switches, etc. But I'm having a difficult time figuring out what size sockets I need for what size nuts. As examples, I'll be using standard alpha pots, thonk jacks, and mini switches. How can I find out the size of nuts for these so I can get the right sockets? The datasheets don't have nut sizes.

Thanks.

I found the alpha pot datasheet that shows the nut diameter, which looks to be 10mm:

It looks like mini switch nuts are 8mm:

Oh! Are these deep enough for standard eurorack parts?

They work on just about everything. I had to drill a hole in the back of one of them to loosen the antennas on a theremin. I like them because they don't slip as easily as the metal ones, and they don't mark the finish on the panels, or any anodized nuts.

I'm a huge fan of Klein tools nut drivers - https://www.kleintools.com/catalog/nut- ... river-sets

They don't scratch the panels like similar harbor freight type tools, and will last forever.

And yes, deep enough for eurorack (or 5U) parts.

I'm curious, do the Klein nut drivers have the awful puke-like smell of some other clear-plastic hand tools? I had a nice nut driver set in the past but had to sell it because of the awful smell they produced.

I bought a set of these and really like them. Thanks for the recommendation.

In your experience how to they hold up? I'm curious if the hexagonal shape will wear out.

Well, I've had mine for about 3 months...they were suggested to me on another Muffs thread. I've driven about 300 nuts with the one for toggle switches, and it looks new. I'm sure they *will* wear out, but as my torques are low, and it doesn't fit on my impact gun, I have high hopes for durability!
Apparently they were all 3D printed for the first year or more...if those held up, an injection molded jobbie should be far harder.

Do they still make that shit? I used to call it polyvomitchloride (PVC).

I'm not sure. I purchased a set of Excelite hollow nut drivers about 12 years ago and had to sell them recently because they smelled so badly and made everything else stink. It had to do with whatever plastic they were made of - it sounded like it would slowly decompose and generate either stinky oil-like stuff or a stinky gas.
