Modular Addict taking a break?

Post by synthysynth » Tue Aug 04, 2020 1:13 pm

I had some stuff in my cart yesterday and then went to the website today to check out and got this page

https://modularaddict.com/2020wasaninsidejob

Looks like they are closing for a bit?! Any ideas as to whats going on?

they wish to increase traffic to their website, it's fine, sounds like they've been having some problems with payments which they're fixing.

Whatever's going on, it's not a good look. At very least put a real explanation on the landing page rather than some ambiguous attempt at humor. I've been dealing with them successfully for years, but even for me this is off-putting.

Dang, I hope the storefront stays open so that (someday) I can get up there.

Well, it doesn't take a giant leap to guess it probably has something to do with the ripple effect of COVID in the US. Damn near every business is struggling because of this.

Not a great look with that landing page. I wish Modular Addict's business well and hope they can resume operations again, but it's important to be clear and transparent with your customers about what's going on, even if it's hard to do.

I'm getting tired of small vendors (and large corporations as well) using this slick approach of an edgy/funny/silly tagline and some generic opaque copy about how "we're working out all the problems" when some kind of downtime or business problem occurs within their organization. Maybe just be frank with your customers instead of telling them it's "none of their business"?

I thought for sure this thread was going to be confessions/discussion about overspending on modules, like a Muffwiggler 12 Step Program.

Yes, I found that splash page a bit cryptic and irritating. I've been a happy customer otherwise, and hope I can remain so.

I'm getting a bit concerned as well. If nothing else, they have links to important build docs on there. Even if they're not selling right now, it would be good to have access to those. It would be really nice if they'd post some kind of honest statement about what's going on.

I met the guy running it last year, and he is moving on, so this is effectively a change of management. Their Facebook page has a little more information.

It's a tough line to walk -- being frank and honest about what is actually happening...which tends to come off as whiny and sounds like lame excuses -- OR be funny and cryptic which can be off-putting but maybe not whiny.

Less info is where business owners default, generally.

Better would be "we're taking a break with our kayaks, and we will be back September 3rd" or something concise like that.

I didn't see anything more on their FB than a message similar to the current website splash screen. :hmm:

It seems like the modularaddict.com domain is down now? Hopefully everything is ok.

It states "The server is temporarily unable to service your request due to maintenance downtime or capacity problems. Please try again later."

With you on that. Those knobs are the best, should have bought a hundred. Hopefully only a bit more to wait until they're back up.
