2021 : which soldering station, desoldering gun, etc,?

Post by BlinkyLights » Wed Jan 06, 2021 6:41 am

I need a new, complete, setup for personal TH & SMT. Will be soldering bunch of 1/4" cables/snakes soon, the occasional DIY module, and repairing/modding various.

Hakko FX888s seem decent enough, especially for $100.

But the Hakko corresponding Desoldering gun is $250+.

Then I see things that seem too good to be true, like a Soldering and Desoldering pair from YIHUA for $150.

Suggestions, comments, etc?

Thanks, much.

Do yourself a favour and don't cheap out. There's nothing worse than having to buy the right gear after suffering through the wrong gear.

I've got a Weller WE-1010 soldering station and a Hakko FR301 desoldering tool. I find the pair unbeatable.

Good luck in your search.

What, no more hot nail and candle?

Don't cheap out as mentioned. The Chinese stuff is cheap but only "good" and will fry in a couple years. 4 years and two soldering rigs later and go m looking again also.
The only thing that stays the same is change

I have very good soldering gear at my work (JBC), but at home and for my studio cables and all that, I have a Weller Magnastat T40e with 21021 station from 1976, exactly like this one. (ebay link)
I can still get the spare parts, as the guts of that Magnastat system hasn't changed in all those years. There was no need, it works extremely well. It has been something like the industrial standard and I'd guess it will still be around for another couple of decades.

ERSA also comes highly recommended, I have the RDS80 with a variety of solder tips:

https://www.kurtzersa.com/electronics-p ... ds-80.html

Or, if you're in Europe:

https://www.ersa-shop.com/ersa-rds80-el ... p-926.html

Mind you, that is only for soldering (and the basic desoldering using solder wick or manual vacuum pumps of course).

If I understand you correctly you are also looking at a decent desoldering setup? That tends to get expensive very quickly which is logical as it involves much more moving parts (filters, a compressor unit or electronic vacuum pump, a more complex desoldering tip, ...).

That Hakko gun you mention is still quite cheap then because the ESRA X-Tool Vario sets you back about 450€/$ and requires something much fancier than an RDS80. You are then looking at something like an i-CON Vario 2 with (amongst other things) a built-in vacuum pump:

https://www.kurtzersa.com/electronics-p ... o-2-1.html

But that setup sets you back about 1200 to 1500 €/$ depending on the exact soldering and desoldering guns you want.

Just curious if you've picked anything out yet to hold your PCBs while you use all this fancy soldering gear?

Hakko fx888 is a high quality bargain. I’d not worry about a matching desoldering kit.

Do strongly consider fume extraction and a panavice or similar pcb holder.

My surprise fave was a hakko double solder roll holder - it doubles as a tool holder and magnetic base for helping hands etc.

Panavise is an excellent choice, though I found this head: https://www.panavise.com/index.html?pag ... udatarq=22
to be way more useful for holding PCBs (and lots of other stuff) than the one that’s actually marketed as a ‘Circuit Board Holder’.

I am pretty new and I agree about spending decent money HOWEVER, I got a very good iron that made me feel like a soldering god compared to the 2 cheapo kits I tried before:
https://www.amazon.ca/gp/product/B07V8S ... UTF8&psc=1

I'd also advise the spend on solder too. I got burned from a massive splatter from cheap chinese solder (I think it's tabiger?) and thank god I was wearing eye protection.

Is there a cheap desoldering gun that's worth it yet? I got the engineer sucker and it seems very handy to have the silicon tip to seal the join.

Got a TS100 for 50 bucks and it's amazing! The first two solder jobs had a learning curve, but it's so handy, maneuverable and easy.

I first bought an ERSA ICON PICO, regulation and standby are excellent but I was very disapointed by the soldering tool: there is a designing issue and it's almost impossible to tighten the tips without damaging the tool thread.
The ERSA I-CON NANO seems to have a better tool, so that would be a better bet, with ESD as a bonus. (however, I did not try it myself)

Now I own a Weller WE-1010 that I find very reliable, however the regulation is not as fast as the ERSA and the standby is not very accurate (it tends to go to sleep while you are trying to make a joint...)

I bought a KSGER T12 from ALiExpress a year ago and I'm super happy with it.
You have control over the temperature and sleeping mode if your forget it on.

I did plenty of soldering in the past few months and had no issue at all.
I never tried Hakko or a Weller but I think the KSGER T12 is very good for the price.

I think these PCB holders are great.

I got one of these back in March and it's held up well so far: amazon.co.uk/dp/B07X3CZ3FJ/

The dead simple set-and-forget temperature is really good, and it comes with a couple of different tips although I've only used the smallest chisel-type tip. The solder bundled with it was fine and worked decently enough, but once it ran out I got myself some "real" solder from Chip Quik which has been a little easier to work with in a way I'm not sure I can properly describe. https://cpc.farnell.com/chip-quik/smdsw ... dp/SD02715

Many great suggestions, thank you all.

Those PCBite holders are brilliant. The others tips, too.

Probably spent $150 on “disposable” irons, before getting a Hakko FX888 last year. One of the best purchases I’ve ever made.

+1 for the fx888. It's a pleasure to use. If you intend to use a tool for possibly hundreds of hours then you owe it to yourself to get something you'll enjoy using.
