44 Key FATAR group buy, minimoog cases

Post by mlvesecky » Tue Feb 02, 2021 10:34 am

Hello everyone! I have just started down the road of making a replica minimoog now that I have a private woodworking shop (my day job) making the case is finally doable. I have seen around the forums over the years people’s interest in getting 44 key fatars for (mostly) this purpose. I have been in contact with synthcube here in the US and wanted to get enough people on board to make a group buy!

On a related note I am open to making a run of replica minimoog cases, I will fabricate everything (including the aluminum case) except the mod wheels (available from syntaur) and the printed faceplate overlay, mod wheel plate and badges. (I have purchased replicas of these from electronics_bizz on eBay) As not to derail this group buy thread I will very soon start a build thread on my personal Mini. I will finally have peace after neglecting to buy a reissue when I had the chance :tu:

So, who wants to build a minimoog?! (Or anything with 44 keys)

Update! Here is a running list off those interested

I have also started the Minimoog build thread, input and comments encouraged! please direct anything not directly relating to the keyboard buy to this thread. Thanks for all the interest! Model D Build Thread

Very interested, as I was previously looking for a similar keybed! Are you targeting one like synthcube’s 37 key, semi-weighted, no aftertouch?

How well will this keyboard work as a drop in replacement in an original Mini?

If it will fit but requires new holes and maybe some shims that's not a problem. If it doesn't have the dual switches that's not an issue either. I can do my own keyboard controller so that's not a problem either.

Thanks

You'll need to use a different KBD circuit if you use the Fatar KBDs. The original resistor string type won't work with them.

i mean it would sit really nicely on the shelf between the 37 & 49 TP9s and the 61 TP8s.
then all i need is a F1-F4 instead of C1-C4 37key to complete my keybeds-for-imaginary-projects-i'll-never-get-to-build-bingo.

wait i guess i can make a F1-F4 easy out of these 44 keys right? they'll be F1-C4?
anyways. count me in.

I'd be using an uC. I'd scan the keyboard and put out the proper gate and current or voltage for the note. If I use the right uC could add MIDI note on/off. Haven't looked at the pitch bend or modulation circuit yet. That might be doable over MIDI too.

I've written before in other mmg threads that the easiest and least expensive way to get a minimoog KBD is an old 70s era Kimball 'Swinger' -or similar- organ. Many of these have not one, but two Pratt-Read 44 KBDs, and they are often listed on Craigslist for free. They're also mostly big empty boxes, easily dismantled for the good bits, and you'll get a few other synth useful parts like a reverb tank and circuit. Avoid most Hammonds, Thomas and Baldwins. Those Keybeds have their own problems wher a minimoog re-do is concerned. Afew of those brands also use the P-R KBDs, but if you dont know what you're looking at and for, you may end up with a PITA white elephant.

Wow it’s great to see so much interest! I will update the Top post to include a list of people who are interested tomorrow when I can sit down at my computer!

It will be f1-c4, semi weighted, no aftertouch unless everybody really wants it, same as the 37 key version currently on synthcube.

I don’t have a real mini or fatar keyboard to figure out sizing but there is a drop in replacement for the pro 1 which uses the same style fatar to replace a similar Pratt Reed so I am confident that it can be easily done without modifying the original case. For my replica(s) I will be building them to spec, I imagine it’s likely a spacer or something will be needed but I don’t see it being too big or anything.

I live in Vermont now so unfortunately getting anything music related and used locally is pretty much a non starter. Also I have an octave cat and one Pratt Reed is enough for me!

On the clone topic My approach to the guts has evolved as I’ve hashed out exactly what I want out of this project. Originally I was going to use total replica boards that you can find around, but I really like the interior changes that moog made with the reissue. Mounting all of the knobs, switches, etc on a PCB as well as modern ribbon cables is very appealing vs the rats nest, and having a fatar already modernizes it in what I find to be an acceptable way, so Incorporating other non audio changes that where good enough for moog are certainly good enough for me. If I was to produce these boards for DIY it would make actually building this thing a lot easier. With this philosophy in mind I will probably use an arduino or other microcontroller. I haven’t really looked into key scanners yet but I will explore whether to completely replace the keyboard section or just feed it the values it wants. Probably the former but I don’t want to rule the latter out.

I will update the opening topic here with keyboard interest and start a build thread for the minimoog tomorrow, my replica faceplate and badges are arriving March 8th, and then I will start construction of the chassis prototype in earnest. :sb: :sb: :sb:

I think you'll discover moog used the latter. There's quite a bit of the mini character in that KBD and LHC circuitry. Be careful what you modify there.

How significant is the the price difference between the two? I was planning on committing to the 8s, I don’t use aftertouch really but if it’s not much more I would certainly be interested in incorporating it.

What are people thoughts? Do people really want aftertouch? I don’t want to alienate anyone on price. But I also don’t want to omit features people find valuable.

Thank you KSS for the input! In that case I will definitely go that route when approaching the keyboard scanner!

Build thread coming this evening, keep on wiggling!

After speaking with someone who has knowledge of the reissue and thinking about it for a while, I would like to commit to making this buy for the 9s type as it is what the reissue uses and anyone making a MIDI controller probably wants aftertouch as well.

I have updated the first post with a list and a link to the synth build thread! So lets keep this thread strictly for the group buy and any discussion Minimoog related can be moved over to the build thread. Thank you everyone again for the input, support and interest!

Wow, the thought of building my own MM is really exciting. I think you can count me in.

How big of a run of cases do you think you'd be able to make? And I know it's early in the process, but what do you think you would charge for them?

im in if it is a Fatar TP/9s (44keys as you mentioned)
would like to see this:
- Weighted
- dynamic bubble contact
- monophonic aftertouch

I don't see this specified, but I think its necessary for you MM if you want it to come close to the reissue right?

Bubble contacts are standard. I'd be surprised if the moog re-issue was weighted. Or even semi-weighted. The original P-R's certainly weren't.
Mono AT is indeed a useful add. Can be simply and easily done to OG mmgs with P-Rs too.
