Eventide H9 Review - as synth processor (100% guitar-free)

Post by GovernorSilver » Thu Jul 05, 2018 1:36 pm

The H9 is not a new product but synth-centric pedal demos are still few in number compared to guitar ones. Some inspiring stuff for this H9 owner. Loopop has been killing it lately with his videos.

I'm thinking of picking one up again, used to have it for guitar, but for synth it would be amazing. Anyone see some recent Suzanne Ciani videos? She has the 2 H9's in a custom rack mounted case. Pretty awesome.

I saw her play at Kennedy Center in DC a few months ago, but wasn't aware of the H9s.

They should be a great fit for synths because of the extensive MIDI implementation. You can for example use a MIDI sequencer to sequence a pitch shift interval.

There's a great new Buchla module (actually a couple) from Northern Light Modular centred around the H9. Modulation points for all the knobs.

Great unit! Bought one a year ago, and didn't have the time yet to really explore it.

Have an H9 Max and a regular H9 and love using them, especially when interfacing with my iPad or iPhone. I also have a standalone unit to control effect parameters. Sometimes I reach for my more dedicated effect pedals but these are so much fun to play around with.

Great video, the H9 is an awesome pedal, I use it a lot for mixing too.

Re: Suzanne Ciani
I looked around to find the custom enclosure and couldn't find it, but did find a bunch of pictures of her using 2x H9 w/ an Ipad. Funnily, every single photo has them facing "backwards"

I did finally watch this whole video beginning to end and I feel conflicted. I had my heart set on an Eclipse, but this video has me re-thinking it. The ease of editing makes this look really appealing.

I did have a Pitchfactor and Timefactor before and thought they were too sterile, and what I really want are "weird" effects, this video has showcased some of that and the edit-ability brilliantly well.

HMMMM...

Doesn't that mean that they would now both be Maxs? I thought once you have a Max you can then share all the algos onto a Core or Regular if it is on the same account?

I am using an H9 Max, and it's a monster. I'm borrowing it from a friend, but rest assured, I will have my own soon. It's the desert island effects unit.

If you are maxed on the H9, do you get future algos too?

If you have a MAX, you can share algos with up-to-three other core or regular MAXs. Unfortunately, you have to have the MAX up and running or the other MAXs revert to their original algos.

Thats not my experience; as long as the MAX is on the account, the cores can use its algorithms. I does not have to be powered up or anything. Im not sure if you can get more algorithms withouth the max online though, as they need to be upgraded/authorised.

I'm still struggling with the fact that it's only one effect at a time and that the hands-on controls are not really that hands-on.

I know the effects are stellar, but the H9 is really more of a glorified VST/DSP platform.

What will change my opinion about it, knowing that I am more of the boutique kind of guy (ATM Chase Bliss Dark World + Warped Vynil HiFi, Empress Reverb, Alexander Colour Theory)?

Cheers!

I use one or two with my synth setup all the time, they are killer! Someone mentioned the Buchla format pedals from Norther Light Modular, but recently they made a batch of reformatted EvenMidi controllers as eurorack modulars. Tons of fun!

It’s one at a time but what it does it does extremely well. As an admitted analog purist myself I feel your sentiment (Mood/Thermae/Ct5/WarpedVinyl/Ive got them all). Not analog, but as far as digital reverbs/delays, the H9 is hard to beat. And they are slowly starting to release some delay/reverb combo effects that are quite good.

I haven’t made the leap into MIDI with my synths yet, but I have a feeling once I do it will become indispensable.

It won’t fool you as a tape delay up against a Space Echo, but it’s also 1/10 the size and also can do 20 other things. Eventide doesnt mess around. My only concern is that they’ll prob be releasing something new soon...

And you also have the iPad as interface. But I actually tend to use it where I don't want to tweak it realtime.

Have 2 H9, love them, probably not as instantaneously satisfying for guitar as Strymon, but they do far more. I had both on my guitar pedalboard at first, then one on the board and one inserted in my interface for the synths. If you bought an H9 Max, you can upgrade up to 5 other H9 or H9 core to H9 Max, so I'll probably buy another cheap one and max it out, that'll float between both rigs.
