Favourite Delay Units

Post by freakynorth » Sat Apr 25, 2020 9:03 am

What’re YOUR top five delay/echo units?

And what 5 delay/echo units do you want to try
someday?

For me :

Top 5 Delay/Echo Units:

1. Skychord Cloudbuster - this thing is insane.
Low-fi analog delay with a 4 step sequencer and LFO.
I bought one sometime in 2013-2014, had it for two years, sold it and just bought the exact same unit I had from the guy I sold it to because I missed it so much. I pestered him regularly to sell it, haha. It’s the best pedal ever to me.

2.Lexicon Prime Time 93 - another piece I’ve lusted over for years and finally got. I literally just got it and I have yet to fully dig in with it but so far it’s pretty fuckin’ bonkers. So much fun to play. Pretty well an instrument in itself.
The delay multiply knob is life!

3. Roland Space Echo RE-201-
The classic! I had lusted for one since I heard about them around 2011-2012.. I finally got one about a month ago. Perfection. Everything I thought it would be and more!

4. 70’s MXR Analog Delay - another classic,
It showed up in my radar because of Neil Young! I always loved his delay sound on the Dead Man soundtrack!

5. DOD DFX94 - really cool quirky digital delay / sampler,
Cheap too!! I got some weird sounds on one I can’t really recreate again.

5 delay/echo units I want to try:

1. Bugbrand PT Delay
2. SnazzyFX Wow and Flutter
3. Ursa Major Space Station
4. Binson Echorec
5. Clouds Hill FX Floppy Disc Delay

I haven't used many but...

- Electrix MoFX: It does 4 simultaneous effects. The delay is really fun to play with, but then you combine it with tempo-sync'ed tremolo/panning and it goes all crazy.

- Alesis Midiverb II (delay presets): I don't know what it does but whatever preset you choose, it just syncs and blends in pretty smoothly.

- Yamaha E1010: A bit on the noisy end, but it's quite fun and versatile, and warm sounding. I wish I had not sold mine.

- Line6 DL4: I haven't used it as much as I'd like to, but it's been in production for 20 years and you see it in lots of pedalboards and setups. It's not the most pristine of delays but it has something for everyone and the looper mode is pretty good.

- Behringer Vintage Delay VD-400: A pretty decent analog delay for $30? Sure, give me two.

I can't get to five... but my absolute favorites are:

1. Korg SDD-3000 - had an OG in '87, sold it somewhen in the past. Got the reissue 'pedal', and fell back in love. The preamp for crunchiness; the modulation section (now expanded) for subtle-to-weird fluctuations; and the ability to go from flange to looong.
2. Hungry Robot The Wash - discounting its 'wash' side, it's a true-blue cap cascade design, with all sorts of analog aliasing and artifacts. Not the longest, DEFINITELY not the cleanest; but the most characterful, period. And then that Wash...!

As to the wish list:

1. Strymon Volante - on the short list/in the cart. I'm notsomuch a purist as I am results-driven, as far as separating out my 'analog' from 'digital' delay units. But this one's just too sonically sweet to ignore for too much longer...!
2. The ol' Roland Space Echo - not really a 'wish', more just to have. Too much repair and/or maintenance-intensive; and I can get 80-90% of the way with the Volante (in current production).

I’m not familiar with the Volante.. I’ll give it a peep!
I have to admit, I’m pretty uneducated on Strymon gear!

I’m mostly an analog delay guy so...

Faves:
1) Roland SRE-555 Space Echo for tone
2) T-Rex Replicator module for CV and control of warble and saturation
3) Deluxe Memory Man TT-1100 for tone, tap, and CV
4) DOD Rubberneck for control of saturation and EQ and tap

Want to try:
Can’t think of many. The Morley oil delay just out of curiosity.

The ones I really like are the Empress Echo System and the Strymon Magneto.
Also have a TC flashback 2 that sounds really good but it needs software for creating custom patches. Also had a strymon timeline a while ago. It sounded great but all the fun params were hidden in menus.

I've had many, obsessed over delay for quite a while.

Favorites:

Strymon Volante - on my guitar board. Plenty of control over the degradation of repeats, and lots of features including a sound-on-sound looper.
EHX Deluxe Memory Man, 90s big box - stays hooked up to the FX Send on my mixer for synths.
Fairfield Circuitry Meet Maude - very unique and interesting, dark and spooky. Nothing else quite sounds like it.
Ibanez AD-202 rack - one of my first and still a favorite, though I don't own one anymore.

Ah yes! The BIM! I completely forgot about that one. I’d like to give it a go.
Yeah, as much as I’d like to try a Binson, having one is a whole other story.. apparently hard to find one in good shape and up keeping it must be a nightmare!

Hey! Another thing I haven’t tried actually.. an older Memory Man.
I had a Memory Toy YEARS ago that I actually really dug at the time, pretty different from an OG Mem man I bet though.

Fulltone Tube Tape Echo
old/large format EHX Deluxe Memory Man ( I use my feet to adjust knobs while playing, so don't like the new smaller ones )
Moog 104Z
Eventide Time Factor, Space
Carl Martin DeLayla

like to try:
Roland RE-201
Binson Echorec
one of those old oil can delays ( Morley? )

Forgot about the Fulltone... that’s actually the first tape echo I knew about back in the day. I saw one while going into my local music store, it was way out of my price range at 12 years old. I remember thinking it looked and sounded cool though.

The oil can delays definitely seem like something cool to try! Another thing that is hard to find in good shape apparently.

No love for the plain Jane EQD Avalanche Run? Affordable, built like a tank, has reverb too.

Another vote for Meet Maude too. Like having a Shallow Water embedded in your OBNE Black Fountain.

Great pedal, lots of useful stuff packed in there. Not much tonal control over how the delay or reverb sound though, so you have to like it "as is". The Reverse and Swell functions are great.

I have a Roland RE-150 that is pretty great, can't really beat that real tape delay sound for that sort of thing.

As far as digital delays, I love my Bel BD80 (the blue-face one) and ADA s1000. The Bel I bought untested for like $200 (was a drunk late night eBay purchase :sb: ) and luckily it worked! It also had fully expanded memory, which was an awesome surprise! The Bel is 12-bit (pretty sure) and has a 2x time button that I think halves the sample rate from its initial 33kHZ (again I'm pretty sure, its hard to find tech specs on this one!)

The S1000 is really crunchy and can give me some really nasty digital artifacts. I adjusted some internal trim pots to make it sound a little more grimy too. I have that going into a moog mf-101 to cut out some of the harsh bits that get added to the signal, but the effect ends up being really nice and rich

- strymon el capistan : super great for evolving sound-on-sound stuff!

- sonic crayon mechanical sun : dark delay / looper with some fun pseudo-granular time stretching stuff

- digitech pds-8000 : my old workhorse lofi looper/delay. I think I had it on my board for 9/10ths of my shows.

Let's see...

Roland RE-201

The high-voltage BBD pedals (eg. original EHX Memory Man)

Korg SDD-2000. It's digital but varied the clock speed like a BBD pedal.

Any of the pro Lexicon/Eventide/TC/etc. boxes from around 1985 onward. Often you just want a clean delay that just does delay without adding "color", frequency limiting, or other artifacts.

Lexicon Vortex.

Moog mf-104 m sd
4ms DLD
Modcan dual delay
Boss dm-2 / dm-3
Chronoblob

I’d love to own a space echo one day. Used it twice and fell in love with the sound. I’m not in love with the thought of having to fix it.

Picked up a couple of delays recently-
Got a rubberneck and think it's pretty cool. It can get really chaotic pretty quickly, which is a pro for me.

Also picked up a Obscura on Ebay for super cheap ($89). Just happened upon it and took a chance after reading some reviews. I really dig it. It works great with my Octatrack, and allows for an alternate mode that allows you to tap in a tempo, and then swing the delay effects into different tempos, while remaining in sync. Also it's stereo, and sounds great. No noise, and a true bypass!
Be good to yourself, and be good to others.

i absolutely love the Maxon AD-999.
amazing at doing the whole playing a solo instrment in the desert type sound. the taps are spaced, with just the right amount of high end roll off.
it's not insanely wet - but it sounds really fucking epic :D (this one is an all analogue with BBD)
