Serge boats

Post by weedywhizz » Wed Jan 08, 2020 7:18 am

I'm about to finish the design of black powder coated or anodized Serge boats that will work with my cheeks @ samodular.com

Anything you Serge guys would like to see added to the boats ? Like additional cutouts for power cables or something else ?
Please let me know.

Thanks.

Seconded, and with attachment points to handle R*S 4x4 as well as STS Shop and M-class panels.

Possibly an extra mounting point for R*S MTA distro board as well.

XL boats - sure why not.
Need to check the exact mounting hole spacing for RS modules.

Second the idea for extra mounting point for the R*S MTA distro board, especially since it looks like the side mounted XLR jack is going to have to go.

Here's a thread with the 4x4 dimensions - almost Buchla, but not quite...

Serge boats - compatibility with Loudest Warning screws

Post by dbernhardt58 » Wed Jan 08, 2020 1:53 pm

As long as we are getting compatibility with R*S 4x4 as well as STS Shop and M-class panels - could we also be compatible with the Loudest Warning mounting design?

I mentioned about LW format on the Facebook post. It seems lots of 4U builders follow the LW format which I believe is Eurorack rails but separated at 4u heights. I imagine this is a very significant number of Serge/4U systems out there and the number of builders for this format seems to be growing steadily. I have wanted one of your cases for years in Serge (LW) format.

Got you guys. Let me finish the STS/RS version first and I'll think aout the LW version.
Meanwhile a made a new drawing with RS module mounting holes and the XLR/MTA connector hole added.
The XLR/MTA hole can be closed by optional small panels or even 3D printed panels.

Will do the XL version now.....

Are the panel mounting holes threaded?

Hey, hello,

How deep are these boats (internal dimensions)? Thanks!

Having the xlr hole on the back only is problematic if you are using the RS power supplies as most use one cable per boat and it would get blocked if you stack them.

What's the price point you are expecting?

Full depth of the boats is 78mm. So 76.5mm for you panels.

@xonetacular

Fully agree. Having the XLR ports on the side will prevent them from being mounted to cheeks though.
There's always the possibility to directly wire the distro board to a XLR plug and feed it through the other hole on the back.
Does anyone have the spacing of the mounting holes for the RS distro board ? Will make holes for it then to fix it to the boat.

Aiming a price of around 100€ for a black powder coated boat.

I'm open to any ideas :)

What is the spacing for the holes on the side? I use Intellijel 4u rack ears and am curious as to whether these are compatible. The rack ears have 2 sets of holes, one spaced 167.5mm apart and the other 88mm apart.

You could always do both if you have little plates to block them off, and if they use cheeks it would block the empty hole anyway. Some people won't use cheeks and just want a cheaper boat option. Also it doesn't have to prevent them from being mounted to side panels. The side panels just need a hole in the side for each connection.

Feeding a whole xlr power cable through multiple boats doesn't really make sense. If you are using multiple boats the main benefit imo of using separate cables for each is the ability to lower resistance through multiple cables. For a 3 boat setup I would rather just have 3 xlr jack openings on the back of one boat and I would wire them and everything internally to my own distribution.

Even if you wanted to use the PSD boards in each boat you only need the xlr jacks on one and can wire the boards to the jacks separately between the boats.

Totally got the wiring stuff and I didn't mean poeople could feed the power cables through the boats to connect this way.

You could feed cables to each boat with each cable having a XLR plug installed and the other end going to the PSD or RS distro board - using the standard Serge hole on the back of the boats.

That reminds me of getting holes for the Serge PSD done as well :tu:

What screw are they threaded for? Standard M3 or a different size/pitch?

These look great, definitely interested in the XL version. Is it going to be approximately 100€ for the XL? And are you thinking one without the powder coating?

No, aiming at 129€ for the black XL version - just like my 6U Buchla boats. No plans yet to make boats without powder coating. Those are already available by RS and it is not my goal to push RS out of the market with cheaper boats. The goal is to make boats that also work with my Buchla style cheeks.

I would also be interested in LW format boats. Something like your 8U buchla case with the side cheeks would be really nice!
