Post by Fuzz » Wed Jul 29, 2020 12:21 pm

Hi everyone,

The new episode of Source Of Uncertainty is out and we got to talk to Doug Clauder from Studio H about his modules. Robert also show's off the Studio H Dual Programmable Oscillator.

Thanks for listening!

Oh, and we also have t-shirts now: https://sourceofuncertainty.threadless.com/

Another great episode, you guys are doing something really interesting here and pulling back the veil to broaden everyone's understanding of where all this magical hardware comes from. Hearing Doug talk about the process of trying to figure out capacitive LEDs etc but then realizing that there's an LED switch that would work perfectly might seem like the most obvious thing in the world if you're sitting in your studio holding the module in your hand. But behind the scenes, finding out about a part number you weren't aware of before can be a Really Big Deal. Likewise it was neat to hear about that moment when Doug realized that he no longer needed two encoders so he had extra space on the right side to add new features that the 210e doesn't have. If you just let designers talk they will tell all sorts of esoteric stories like this and it's cool that you are giving people the chance to do so.

Robert's comment at 1:30 about not thinking about anything but the last step – manufacturing/assembly – when you buy something really nails it. There's often a very long process of experimentation and troubleshooting and iteration which leads to a working module, and (as we all know) even when a module is released into in the world there are often more things to tweak and change to further refine its journey towards perfection.

Maybe add a link to Doug's site in the first post?

The shirts look great too, would love to see them in black.

Wonderful to hear from Doug on the podcast.

It’s inspirational observing firsthand how his mind
moves from idea to execution to idea etc.

Besides all the excellent modules he has given us,
a few more things that were not mentioned on the episode:

His work on curing system lock ups and the development of the bus repeaters bears mentioning. This has been a life saver for me personally.

Going back in time on the forum, you’ll find that Doug has shared many valuable patch ideas. Any new user of buchla would do well to get in there and have a look.

Another thing that I can’t help but mention is that Doug is generous with his knowledge. He has suffered my often naive questions and ideas for a few years now. Your response will contain a graph. I’ve learned much.

In maybe my first email to Doug I said something like, this is playing out exactly like a typical dream I would have. One of my favorite posters on MW makes e version of favorite utility module. It came true though! Thanks Doug!

Many of those "naive questions and ideas" were helpful and led to better designs. So thank you!

Wow, another excellent episode—great work SOU folks, and great work to Doug! Super interesting to hear how the 254e / DPO / CSR came about, and to hear more about the process evolved.

Interested to see where deeper preset manager ideas could go; seems like there's a lot of interesting potential hiding in the 200e preset system that isn't served by the 206e or 225e...once you have all of that preset data gathered in one place, seems like a lot of fun/interesting manipulation and scrambling could happen.

Seeing Doug pickup his new 18U 200e system (with many empty spaces) from Don ans Jon Schatz at the 2009 AHE in the Maker Dojo in Mountain View nailed it for me. I put in an order through Jon later that Fall. The rest is history for me. Thanks Doug for all your great work advancing this quirky elegant instrument platform. My system includes your 255e and 258e plus the repeaters that keep the her from locking up like it used to. You rock. Can't wait to listen to this podcast.

I have to join the praise of Doug and this podcast :hail:

Doug is one of the reasons I (still) own a 200e. And everyone with a 200e should have a 258e, the perfect companion to the craziness of the 259e. Thank you!

Thanks for another amazing episode! Doug is great, and without his bus repeaters I would be crying myself to sleep every night :hail:
( He shot me 3 on the house because yeah, he is that fucking cool!!! )
I also can testify that the CSR is an amazingly deep and thoughtful module that REALLY ties together the missing pieces in the Buchla ecosystem.

Cheers to you all :sb: :sb: :sb:
